Oh my, yes! It's only NAMED a Jazz bass because Fender designed it to kinda match the Jazzmaster 6-string guitar. It is DEFINITELY suitable for rock...and just about every other style of music, too.
No problem. I only asked because I see P-basses by Fender being recommended over their Jazz for Rock..
A P-bass has a nice growl that will cut thru a mix but there once was a Rock band by the name of Led Zeppelin who's bass player played a 'vintage' jazz bass and you know the rest. )-(

Two Fender suggestions:
1) Used 60's classic Jazz (Love these, and they go cheap used, sometimes with cool mods).
2) Fender MIM P-bass (a friend got one of these for $375 with a gig bag when she also bought an amp and a guitar. Honestly, that little MIM P-bass KILLS).

Im going to say a Peavey Ridge 4 NTB BXP. I got mine for 100 bucks used from my bass teacher (an awesome deal!), and this thing has the thinnest neck and buttery feel is sooo amazing. Check it out.
I bought one of these new about 4 years ago for $229 on sale at a local music store and I really enjoy the bass. The original pups are passive, but it has active electronics. I recently put EMG's on it and I'm even happier with it. The action is nice and low with that slim, great feeling neck. I use Thomastik-Infeld Super Alloy strings on it. Give it a try if you're going to audition other basses under $400. I think its also available without the active electronics.

Which models? The Performer Series looks to be discontinued.
lhoward, the SR300 runs on a 9V battery. That isn't an option.
