Recommendation for Subwoofers

My band plays out a couple of times per month at 150-300 person venues. We are in the process of upgrading our PA to allow everything to go direct, including an electronic drum kit and of course bass. Was hoping to receive any feedback on models that have worked well vs. size of subs, vs. # of subs.

2 x 15?
1 x 18?
2 x 18?

So far we've considered the Mackie SRM, JBL PRX, and possibly QSC 18s.

Anyone every played through the QSC K? It is a dual 12" sub. I'm considering these because they are much more compact. Would most definitely consider running 2 of them.

What's your budget and what's available used locally? Our local shop, Alpha, carries a lot of QSC and Yorkville. I was particularly impressed by the Yorkie LS701P which is a low-profile powered 2 X 10 sub for $700 and change. I'm using the low-end / discontinued 1 X 18"s and have never had a lick of trouble.

I appreciate the input. At this point we are focusing more on the performance rather than our budget.

We may end up with the JBLs, but the Yorkville's sound enticing with quite a few recommendations.

IMO, with that size venue you'll need (2) 18s minimum. And that doesn't give you tons of headroom.

We play rooms that size with (4) 1x18s and (4) 15" mains. Probably more than needed, but not lacking.

In my last band we used the QSC K12 and KSUB setup, two of each. It wasn't real impressive. Good sound but didn't seem to have a lot of extra power.

I've been using my setup for a while now and found it to be plenty for rooms that size and even a few outdoor gigs (crowd up to near 1,000, I think) we played.

Yamaha Club V S115V x 2 powered by Yamaha P5000S (500W/ch into 8 ohms) for mains
Yamaha Club V S118V x 2 powered by Yamaha P7000S (700W/ch into 8 ohms) for subs

I have 2 1x18 passive Peavey subs. They work well for me. Most of our DJ gigs are outdoors with pretty large crowds. I had rented JBL 400 watt powered subs in the past. that also worked well. They were 1x18's also. My mains are 2 way 15's. I run 2, 4 or 6 of them depending on the place.

I love the Yamaha Club series and have used them for years. We're hoping to cut down on weight by going with newer powered speakers. The Club Series are so heavy! Yamaha just recently opened up their DSR series to the portable public. I'm most likely going to put those on top of the poles.

Sounds like everyone is leaning towards the double 18s. Too bad about the QSC KSubs.

Probably a stupid question but how different are bass cabs from generic PA Subs? I play out with a GK 410 NEO and love the punch and have never gotten complaints about not enough having enough bass. My thought process tells me that four 12" speakers coming out of a PA should be able to drive more than a 4x10 bass cabinet. Am I way out in left field?

Best bang for the buck powered sub out there in the under $1200 price range is the Yorkville LS801P.
If you don't mind the size and weight (which usually gets forgotten about once you hear them) it will beat the snot out of everything else with ease.
A pair will easily do 300+ people, a single could probably get it done as well.
