Recone, Replace, or New Cab

Ok, so a few months ago I made a post about how I lent out my D410xlt and it came back farty.

Due to busy work schedule and a lack of gigs I've put off getting it fixed til now. This is the msg I got from my amp tech in regards to his diagnosis...

"Yup. They all push out too easily. The spiders are toast and the cones are creased from over excursion. The farting is because the cone suspension is stretched and damaged and the amp can't control the cones anymore."

He quoted me just over $800 to replace all 4 drivers, parts and labour.

From what he's said, does this mean a recone is not a possible option?? If not should I be looking to get a second opinion on the repair??? Seems rather steep...

Depends on the cost of the speakers he is going to use. The speakers that come in the cabinet are Eden "EC-1060XL Cast Frame", going by their website.

$100 to $125 each (used), no mention of condition and I'm not familiar with that site.

You could also look into doing the replacement yourself, it's a fairly simple task if you're just swapping over some speakers, if you can find a good source of them. Though on saying that, he might also have a bench fee on you for checking it out in the first place.

May I suggest a trip to Santon Audio. They're Off Woodbine south of Hwy 7. Bob is my goto guy for any driver problem I've had since the Seventies.

Edit: Dang Chef! You beat me to it yet again!!!! :D

You are going to want to send those speakers to 3L Sound

They were the only Canadian Eden repair center for years and have such a large stock of the old Eden recones that apparently Eden has been buying them off of them. They are very experienced with recones and will get that cab to sound new again. Santon Audio would likely be getting their recone stock from 3L. You may be able to save a few $$.

Removing and Replacing speakers is childsplay. You don't need that tech. If you can work a screwdriver then you can remove the grill. Undo each speaker and make a little note as to what colour wire goes to the (+) or Red dot. Take pictures. Then once they're reconed, put them back in like you found them. That will save you some more $$.

Without good speakers those cabs are hard to sell and don't fetch much $$ when they do. I'd think it would be worth your time IMHO.

I tried emailing the repair dept. at 3L, it came back as undeliverable. Looking at their price list the quotes I got from both Fab Audio, and Santon were cheaper than at 3L.

It's looking like a full recone, including install, and 30day warranty is gonna be $400... Now I just gotta decide who to go with and when I can get down to the GTA.
