recording essentials

Hey everyone I was wondering what kind of things I need to record im running a pc with windows xp, ill be using a m-audio radium 49 midi controller and was wondering what would be a good external sound card to get? What else would I need to record my bass and guitars onto my computer? and is there a program for pc thats is like digital preformer?
