Recording help for something new

Posting here to see if I can get some help. I have a buddy that reached out to me who I used to play in a band with back in the 90s. Obviously, technology then and now is totally different. He recorded himself playing guitar on an iPhone and messaged me. He asked if I could put some bass to it.

I figured maybe the best thing to do would be to listen to that iPhone message through headphones while playing the bass into something that can record it and then I could email him that track of the bass. That way he would have it to play too. Does that seem like I’m on the right track?

I was looking around and it looks like this might be the right piece of gear in the link. Can someone let me know if I’m approaching this the right way, wrong way, or if there’s anything else I need?

That would work. That and Audacity (free DAW) will allow you to record his part from your phone on one track, then record your bass part on another. Then you can export just your track and send it to him.

Consider how you will connect your other gear to the interface. Would you, as you said, listen to the recorded guitar track using headphones plugged into your cellphone, and play the bass plugged into your recording interface? You'd need to hear yourself playing the bass as you record your track, I reckon, and that could be accomplished by plugging in your bass amp to the output jack from the Focusrite Solo.

If you selected the Focsurite 2i2, you'd have the ability to plug the phone output into one channel (assuming your phone has an analog headphone jack & adapter cable will be required) and your bass in the other, allowing you to listen to both sources in your headphones while recording your bass track, and no amplifier is required. You can record the original guitar track as one channel in your software, and your new bass track in the next channel. This makes it very easy to line up your new track with your buddies original track (mute your second copy - his original probably sounds better).

That makes sense, good explanation. I’ll look at that other model.
