Recording software

Hello!
I wanna record some tracks.
So i wondered what software i should install at the computer.
I would like something that's free so i can try if its fun to do it and stuff.
I got a singstar microphone. Will that work?
Or should i use an iphone instead?

As seen in this video:

There i used my iphone for filming and recording the music and bass at the same time.

So thanks for all software recomandations and what to use

i downloaded fruityloops... it's pretty complicated.
Are there simpler programs out there?

audacity is the best free one.

Cakewalk Sonar Home Studio is like $100 and seems pretty awesome. Professional interface and options without the pricetag. I've used Garageband and Logic for the past 2 years since my engineers had macs. ProTools is pretty much designed for engineers and isn't as musician-friendly.

Ableton Live Intro is available as a full function version for download for a free trial. Not sure how long you get exactly, but its plenty of time to fully check it out. I seem to recall that retail on the full Ableton Intro package is ~$99, which is darn cheap for all you get.

Not free, but very cheap and very capable DAW software that is quite easy to understand and use.

Some of the basic 1in/1out USB interfaces also come with an older, but fully functional version of Ableton Live Lite. So, you get the USb interface and a good DAW for little money

As noted above, Audacity is also a very good option. It's free and offers decent capabilities for the price.

Reaper is free for 30 days and in my experience much easier to use than Audacity. It also comes with free plugins that do not sound horrible.

+1 to reaper, although I just use garageband once my conscience gets the best of me.

Reaper is a pretty good bargain. Tons of ability at a small $60 price. That said, I do find Audacity to be a fine choice too! Plus, it's open source.

Abelton Live "Lite" came with my Line6 Toneport. Its pretty easy to use for recording.

I will say, im trying to find a better program to use to build drum tracks. But live was free.

It came with Live 7, but free upgrade to 8.
