REDDI DI "THRU"

That's what I currently do :). I just don't see the "point" in having both an amp and the REDDI...You can blend signals for recording but it's really overkill IMO. On stage, I don't get the concept of using an amp with one sound to track your playing and then have the audience listen to the REDDI.

Your monitors always sound different to the front of house mix, heck they even sometimes have a separate monitor engineer with his own desk just to mix the monitors...

Your amp on stage is usually just a monitor, hence it will sound different to your FOH signal, because it needs to... your engineer needs to mix the FOH mix according to his system just like you eq your amp to sound the way you want on stage
 
sound (ground) issues through my own missuse.
bass into reddi, xlr to soundcard, thru to bass amp. i was testing it out before i use it live and for sessions that require an amp and mic as well di.

found my 'thru' noisy if my reddi and bass amp werent plugged into same power point. guess this is common sense.

also pulling out the laptop power supply and using the internal battery cleaned up the thru sound to my bass amp.
 
If you get an outboard XLR pin 1 lifter, that will fix a lot of the problems folks have with grounds buzzing in their amps using the REDDI. For some reason, lifting pin 1 externally works in cases where the ground lift switch doesn't. Just one of those little finicky things about tube amps and transformers, I guess.
 
So what if you wanted to take the signal from the REDDI XLR to your amp Hi Z and take it to the house too? Could that be done? How would you do it? I'm thinking you could take the XLR into a transformer balanced DI and an XLR Thru to House, come out the 1/4" input to amp. The trick is splitting the signal and getting it to Hi Z without affecting the XLR Low Z to house. Also what if you wanted to take the REDDI XLR straight to a poweramp input? I think that would be easy enough if it went to an XLR input and had a XLR thru on the amp.

Just curious.

The thing I've found about splitting the REDDI XLR signal for use in a rig and for FOH is that while it does improve the sound going to your rig, I don't think it's by enough to justify the hit it takes on the tubey quality to the board. YMMV but I and most of us who have tried similar think the best approach just let it be itself and don't try to make it all things to everyone.

I don't think there would be a matching issue if you were only taking the signal to only the amp. An adapter cable to take the XLR to 1/4" with tip ring and sleeve shorted would yield a high impedance signal. That would be easy.

The low impedance signal can be split indefinitely to infinity. You would think they would have given this option though I understand it wasn't designed for live performance. To me if it makes you sound "that good" seems like you would want to use it for both especially since there is no EQ going on at this stage of the signal path. I was thinking about getting one of these but I'm on the fence. If I had one first thing I would do is mod it to have a Low Z Thru (easy) that includes a Hi Z out (more difficult but easy too) that is Galvanically Isolated from the Low Z signal.

Well I can't tell you the mechanics behind it, but I can tell you that Peter Montessi has been hearing complaints about the 1/4" being pass-thru since he added it (yes, the REDDI used to not even have a 1/4" out at all), and if it was that easy, I'm sure he'd do it. Jule Potter has also said there was a reason his Monique preamp has a separate non-transformer-driven 1/4" out as well, and I can't remember what he said, but if it was that easy, he most definitely would have done it.

Basically, if you want that sound both in the PA and your rig, you're best off just getting a tube amp and running a speaker-out DI on it.
 
Because most amps have a DI that doesn't sound nearly as good as the REDDI.

More precisely, though, the REDDI was not ever intended to be used onstage, it was intended for the recording studio only (Peter at A-Designs told me that himself). Because of that, it did not originally have a thru jack at all; they only added it after getting lots of requests from people who were in fact using it onstage.
Also, what works for you and what sounds good on stage does not necessarily transmit into the crowd. Thus you can get the sound YOU want on stage from your amp while the guy at the mixer can control how you mix at the board - note that the REDDI has no eq knobs, just a good sounding preamp that can be tweaked at the mixer for a little more or less of whatever is needed.

He doesn't do it because he doesn't want to. The XLR out is redistributed from the mixing console to many places such as House, Monitor, Recording etc..... the signal can be gotten into an amp easily without affecting the tone. If it couldn't you couldn't use the thing to start with. :cool:

If that's the case, how come it doesn't sound as good in the house when I split it up as when I leave it alone? And how come Mark said what he said? Peter IS trying to keep it at a certain price point.

To make the signal Hi Z one needs to short pins 1 and three and pin 2 is the hot or tip. Using this alone into an amp should yield the same tone as what is going to FOH. The problem that arises that you hear I think is you cannot have the Low Z be both Low Z and High Z at the same time which when attempted would affect the FOH signal the most, there would be a drop in db and tonal degradation over 20 foot of cable. So say you were going through a 100 foot snake, when your signal got there it would be dead as a door nail. The only way to keep both good is to either electronically or transformer isolate each other from the other. The simplest way I can think of doing this is using a good transformer based DI backwards but you would need to get a Thru on the XLR side to get back to FOH. It would be fairly easy to do.

I'm sure there are considerations for not doing this so I'm not saying they should or not. I would think it would add 100 to 150 bucks or so to the price tag which could affect sales though they could offer it as an upgradable option. If I purchased a REDDI the first thing I would do is install a small Jensen transformer inside and an additional 1/4" out (or use the one on there) that would allow for getting the same good tone to both House and Rig. It would take all of 30 minutes to mod the thing to do this.

The way I see it is if I'm going to spend that kind of money on good tone I want it to go in both directions YMMV.
