REDDI Tube DI Mega Thread . Potential megathread that is.

You guys are finally underscoring what I've been trying to say. A big part of the REDDI's tone has to do with solid state components, and not just a single tube. But when these comparisons are made, the end results always seem to be that a bunch of people say "Tubes sound way better than SS" as if that's the whole reason a product does what it does. The transformer in the REDDI is as much responsible for it's tone as anything else inside the box. I dare say it's more important, but at least the synergy with all the components is what makes something sound good or bad in the end. I just don't like boiling things down to tube vs solid state as the industry clearly has products that are fantastic and cross stereotypes in both categories.

None, just commenting on the conclusions that at least a few seem to be coming to from a simple comparison, which is just way off-base IMO. If you had compared the VT to the Millenia for example, then the results might have been in favor of the VT for those who prefer that kind of old school tone, yet the Millenia is the tube preamp/DI.

No, as that would be another solid state item to mess up that glorious tube tone.

hey guys thanks for the read and info.

here is a youtube live recording with the reddi with john's nos tube. i did have a compressor and eq pedal before the di. only did this cause its a dub tone.

the whole band was sent to the mixing desk then a stereo track sent to the soundcard. all production was done live at the mixing desk...warts and all.

its probably a bit low in the mix for my likings but it was live so whatever.

i really like the reddi thanks peter. happy with john's tube also.

btw i think the sovtek tube is a fine choice also. i could have used either tube and been happy with the results.

Pat, that was a hot tune, and even though you could have been a shade hotter in the mix, you never got lost, even when playing high notes, and with a dubby tone, that's always a possibility. Can't say the same for the camera work, though...my favorite part is when the camera guy zoomed right past you to catch the trombone solo. Sheesh, the engineer got more camera time than you!

Greg, I'm digging your playing a lot, especially after hearing that. Very cool and creative ideas.

Peter, I'd say if that's an unmixed track there's not a lot left to do to it Was everything going through something of yours? The gal's voice had to be going through one of your phat tube pres, no?

jimmy your words helped inspire me to get a reddi, as i too like old school tones. your testing and commitment to tone led me to do the same.
ive read every page of this thread.

if you get to the end of the track i get a good 15 secs or so of camera time. im playing a 66 blackface with no mic and a 73 jazz. it was a small rushed session with limited gear so we didnt have the resources to try it, which we useally do. first session with the reddi, i useally use an avalon u5 with the eq active. prefer the reddi, although i havnt a/b them. i guess the avalon u5 is a slightly different kettle of fish though (preamp and di).

i only used compression and eq because there was no post production to the track.
all production was done live in the take which is an old school approach and served our purpose. although it did mean we couldnt change levels, as everything was mixed to one stereo channel.

i just bought a storm im2306 to house my reddi for session work and festivals. very snug, bit expensive but the reddi should have a good home.

i think i maybe of the first people in australia to have one. no one has ever seen one here. my soon to be ending band was named The Red Eyes which is all a bit too wierd.

i too like my higher notes full, around the 10th fret area on E and A strings, which seems to be a sweet frequency spot on fenders and reggae.

Hah - I somehow missed Pat's video the first time around! Man, that turned out great, especially considering it was a one and done take. Very nice!

Me? I'm just a 25+ year bass player who always kinda wished he was Buddy Guy...

Reggie's session sounds marvelous. Man, what a great song and production. Just when I think I'm getting OK at recording and mixing, I hear something like that... it's inspiring.

They used our Ventura Mic Pre and our Hammer/Nail/EM-EQ2 on the 2 buss and tracks.

Have your BAC 500 Compressor out on a few gigs too.... just hitting one or two lights... and its smooth AND Quiet!!!!!!!
Have it in my effects loop... I wish there was a pedal that did that could do what the BAC500 does only because i hate to take a comp like that out on the road... but The devil made me do it... I tell ya.. it can spoil you....
