REDDI Tube DI Mega Thread . Potential megathread that is.

No joke, I was on the verge of giving in and ordering a REDDI yesterday when an electrical storm came through and zapped a power transformer right outside my house. It fried my big screen TV, my A/V receiver, the subwoofer amplifier, and my DirecTV DVR. I think it may have damaged the Xbox also. Grrrr.....

On a lighter note! :)

We just got this in and it seems funny that this happened but stranger things have happened.

J Lo's tour took on the REDDIs and it seems her X is doing the same.
Don't really know if they are related but it would be nice to think that they're not. :)

I just thought about this...Jerry Ziarko was about to order one and his plumbing goes out. Then something else happened right after he finally ordered it. Now you zap out your entertainment system right before.

Following conventional Talkbass logic, the only reasonable conclusion that can be drawn is that ordering a REDDI causes you to break stuff in your house.

Haha. Maybe so! As I recall it, you can't use the terms Talkbass and logic in the same sentence. I think that's an infraction, or it causes a riff in the space-time continuum, or something like really bad like that. :D

I played last night without my usual VT Deluxe, going straight from my jazz bass into a Radial JDI. This is an in-ear gig, so every detail really shows. The jazz bass sounds awesome of course, and the JDI is a fantastic DI, but the feel was really bland without that VT Deluxe. It has been so long since I played without it that I just wanted to give it a shot and see how much I liked it. I regretted it big time because I felt uninspired by the "feel" of the instrument all night long. I came away with a greater appreciation and love for the VTD, but it also makes me want to order that dang REDDI!!!!

Seriously though, I mentioned this a while back but didn't get any takers. Does anyone hear have the necessary equipment to give us a frequency plot on the REDDI? All you really need is a computer and one of several free software packages to get a useful graph. I'd love to see it myself.

If you tell me what free software package to use, I'll try it either tonight or tomorrow. Had my grandson all weekend and he'll be going home later today, so can't do it till later. I have a feeling I know what it reads, but I'll try it.

I've used RMAA before. (http://audio.rightmark.org/products/rmaa.shtml) It's free, and it'll generate the sweeping tone that you can use to scope the result. If you're on a laptop when doing this, make sure you are running on battery only, because the AC adapter on most laptops generates low frequency hum that will skew the sub-low response on the graph. If you can do this, I'll be hopping to see the results! I kind of have a feeling for what it'll read, too, but I'm wondering if there's something else going on there. I've been surprised before by things that I thought I had figured out.

So Braden went for a nap, and I decided to give this a shot. I looked up both of those programs, and RMAA 5.5 looked easiest for me to use, so I went with that.

So now what? ;) My computer setup is an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card running into my computer's stock soundcard so I don't have to use an outside device to make the 2496 work. So what do I do? Do I run the out of my 2496 into the REDDI and back in? Do I need to use an MP3 player with recorded test tones into the REDDI? Please feel free to explain it in terms an idiot can understand, and I won't be offended.

RMAA generates the test sweep. Patch from the card out to the device under test, from the DUT back to the card in, hit Test and adjust levels until you're hot enough and in the green, test, save to the results screen, take screenshot, post here.

This is from memory. RMAA is on my other 'puter, which is rarely hooked up these days. I'll dig deeper if need be.

Wow, wish I could figure out what's going wrong here. I go out of my 2496's left channel output into the REDDI input, out of the REDDI XLR into the 2496 left channel input, and it keeps telling me my input level is too low. I think I'll try it with my MP3 player into the REDDI and see if that does any better.

Sorry guys, I'm trying!

It's kind of a pain to set up since you have to set the soundcard playback and recording levels just so. Try taking the REDDI completely out of the signal chain and just test the sound card in loopback mode for starters, so one cable from out to in on the card. Also check the sound card settings in RMAA and be sure everything's kosher there.

What a great tune. I love how the bass sounds. Nice and fat but not bloated.

Yeah, it can be a bit of a hassle the first time you use trying to figure it out. Setting the levels is critical, because if you don't it won't give a good signal, or it'll clip and cause distortion. The program will tell you if you get any clipping though, so you just have to work with it until that happens, and then back off a bit. I've not pulled up RMAA in many months, so I couldn't tell you from memory either. If I get a chance I'll play with it some and give you some tips. Thanks for trying so far!
