REDDI versus JDI shootout

The are indeed different beasts. I own both--the JDI goes to EVERY gig and EVERY session, and then I assess what the house/studio has and decide from there what to use. The REDDI lives at my studio and goes to very important sessions. I would never schlepp it out live--too bulky, and live the subtleties wouldn't be that critical.

Nope, same take.

JDI = clip 1

REDDI = clip 2

Very subtle differences to me. The REDDI has a bit more "bite" to it, a tiny bit thicker and more aggressive. It feels/responds a bit better too, to me.

I really like the REDDI, but it really is the last 1% tone wise... very high diminishing returns at this point IMO. I'll probably be keeping it, but it makes you think.

I'll try to post up some passive bass clips in the future, but it might take a month or two. Difference might be more apparent then (complete conjecture though... I've never used a passive bass with either of them).

Wow. You are right, it does make me think. I still like the way clip 1 sounds, which means I can keep the money I wanted to spend on the Reddi............so why do I feel disappointed? :bawl:

Pretty cool, I initially thought 1 was the REDDI because of the slight low end thickness. But when I checked on nicer speakers I thought 2 was a little smoother and a little nicer in general, ie it sounded a little more 'expensive', so went back to sitting on the fence!

The REDDI sounds great, but nice to know that the JDI still represents excellent value for money, I wouldn't worry about touring with it either!

It will be hard to do a concurrent recording with a passive bass. One of the differences I would expect would be that the JDI should load the passive bass a bit, while the REDDI, which has a 1M input, should not. This means any sort of passive or active splitter will affect the output.

It would be very very cool if you could add the Countryman DI to the passive mix. But that is easy for me to say ;)

I only use passive basses, but I will say to my ears, having both of these and using them regularly, that the REDDI is simply more "complex" sounding--not necessarily better, but very clearly different indeed when tracking (at least for me:) That said, if the studio was on fire and I had to grab a bass and a DI and run out the door, I'd grab the JDI! There's just less to go wrong, and it is indestructible (which is why I don't tour/gig with the REDDI). My REDDI actually freaked out at a session with an A-list producer out here--it started adding what sounded like an octave effect---it was nuts. We shut it down and I patched in my JDI and forged ahead (though the subtle difference WAS noted by all . . .).
The next day, the REDDI was fine . . .

Wow! I got duped. I thought the JDI was the REDDI. And I even owned a REDDI.

That said, there were a number of confounds, impedance disparity being one of them. I'm sure the guys over at Gearslutz are having a tired debate about the fruitlessness of .mp3 comparisons, etc.

But thanks for that shootout, man!
