Redeemer DDC 5 for Rodney

I got the matching knobs made, swamp ash is not the most lathe friendly wood out there but the knobs turned out nice, my best set yet! :hyper:

I also got the nut cut, its made from wenge.

Thanks guys!

Here are some better pictures of the bass. It needs to be setup and gave one last final polish (for me anyhow) and it'll be ready to go. BUT FIRST, I've got to play it! I hope to get some sound clips posted later today or tomorrow.:bassist:

Very nice scotty!

How did you find doing the Pedulla-style cavity cover, and working with the saw kerf thickness and such?

To be honest, I'm still not 100% happy with my covers. This is my 8th bass using this style of cavity and although they are getting better, they’re still not at the level I want them to be. I used a 23 kerf saw on this one, it's the finest saw I have. Needless to say I need a finer one. I also need to setup a jig to help me get the cuts as perfectly straight as possible. Even with a 23 kerf you don't have very much wiggle room to straighten any imperfections without it showing in the graining, gaps ect.

I had an early Pedulla, and the body surfaces that interfaced with the back and edge of the cover were lined with a dark, contrasting veneer. I'm figuring that was his way to build back up what the saw had turned to dust, as well as possibly any planing he might have had to do. As well as make it look a little fancy.

Not sure how well it would work on harder woods, but I've cut panels out of thicker veneers with a razorknife. It can take a while, and using straight edges on both sides of the cut is not an option, it's necessity. But the cut winds up thin as the blade.

But, I've not cut anything thicker than about 3/16" that way. I'm positive it would work, just the amount of time and the wear and tear on your forearm could be the dealbreaker.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

There are some sound clips here. Mind my usual crummy playing:smug:. Hopefully when Rodney gets a hold of this thing he'll record some good ones.

Usually you can stream the mp3 by right clicking it and selecting open in new window or tab, but for some reason it's not working, at least for me anyhow, so the clips have to be downloaded.

After following this thread and listening to the sound clips, I'm sold on custom built basses. It makes sense in so many ways. #1) You get exactly what you want. #2) It supports local guys using local resources so most of the money stays here in the US.

Why spend as much or more on mass produced guitars cough*warwick*cough when you can have 100% one of a kind??
