Here is a group to post pictures and stories of your Reid Hudson bow!

This is mine, originally commissioned by Joel Quarrington in the late ‘80s.
It is 27”, 136.5 grams with a Viennese frog.

Also play a 1997 Chandler 7/8ths bass made of Vancouver Island spruce and highly flamed maple
wood supplied by Reid Hudson.

Mine is a French model. I weigh it at 140g. The playing length of the hair is 53cm (20.8"); the whole stick is about 70cm (27.5") in total length. I bought it in 2011 from a young pro in Boston who I was taking lessons from and who at the time was the owner of this bass.

I thought I had documentation that it was from 2003 or so but now that I look back, I don't think I have that information anywhere official, unless maybe Reid stamped a year somewhere inside. I'll have to take a look.

I guess by that chart, mine is probably the Tourte, although his measurements aren't exactly mine, and I'm not sure if he's measuring under tension or not. I think I included the screw in my measurements, and his diagram suggests that his numbers don't include the screw.

Love my Reid Hudson bow! I bought it from a previous (and my most recent) teacher last year. He got it new in the mid '90s from Tom Martin who at the time was the exclusive dealer of Hudson bows in the UK and Ireland (maybe Europe?). He couldn't find the papers to know for sure but it might have been in 1994. That happens to be my birth year so I choose to believe that his memory is right!
When I got it it hadn't been used for maybe as much as 10 years since he switched to playing bows by Boris Fritsch. Even with the 10 year old hair I could tell that it was a great sounding and playing bow which was confirmed when I had it rehaired. As you can tell by the pictures it might be time for the next rehair, it has gotten a lot of use the last 6 months!

It is quite worn around the stamp.

Somebody here, from Houston, was selling their Hudson German bow for $6K, and I just couldn't justify biting off that much debt...but, I was salivating over it.

Stumbled across an old Lemur catalog from the year Murray Grodner spent in California, 1987/88.
My Hudson bow is from this era. The silver German is $1125, French $1250.

Interesting that the Schicker silver (I bought one from Murray about 1974) is $895.
They seem to be undervalued today, if you ever get a chance to try a Schicker you may be very pleased.
I love mine, and still play it regularly.

Speaking of Murray Grodner in California, I visited him there at this time.
I recall his wife not pleased at my noisy ‘66 Corvette roaring into their lovely neighbourhood.
Oh well. He had an old Italian bass for sale, but it was suited for classical and I was more interested in a growly jazz sound at the time.
