Rekindling some SWR love... Just sharing.

Hey Y'all,
Just wanted to share my latest thought... About 7 months back I sold my "big rig" - SWR Mo'Bass w/ Megoliath 8x10 after 6 years of service because it was just too big for my needs and thought a 2x10 combo would be more than enough.

I went on and got the Markbass CMD102P 2x10 combo - mainly for the price and weight - the other 2 contenders were the Eden Metro and SWR Redhead. Tone is subjective, all 3 sounded equally good to me... just different.

Anyway, I've been happy with the MB but the other day I walked into a local shop and found the newly updated SWR Redhead... After only a few notes I remembered why I fell in love with the SWR sound to begin with... It's just my sound. So the MB could (most likely will) end up on Ebay and back to SWR I will come running. Plus, the stellar (IMO) review it got on BP mag is sure strengthening my feelings. Hahaha....

I'm on the lookout for my head. I'm really diggin the Kustom GrooveBass 1200 or 1300. Crazy.

maybe i'll stick to GK....hm..
or SWR!

Yes, I have never had any problems with SWR cabs, but I had to work hard to get a sound I really liked from both my SM400 and my SM900 heads. I like the tone from my two very early Goliath 3 Juniors, especially vertically stacked.My biggest regret is selling my two Bigfoot (2x12) cabinets - they sounded awesome with my Ampeg SVT2 head when I had it.

It's my very first (non-combo) rig, and I'm a n00b? But. My new WorkingPro 700 has ruined me.

I seriously didn't know exactly what was meant by tone. Everybody talks about it, nobody defines it. (I basically got kicked out of the King's X board for asking!) But a few days ago I was playing with this baby and I had an a-ha moment: Tone is just getting your bass to sound like you think a bass should sound. And mine does now. So, yeah, I'm a believer.

I too am excited about the new Redhead. I have the Super RedHead and love the sound. It is just a bit weak for the live gig without PA support. From the review, it sounds like SWR has beefed it up to help cut it in a band situation as well as in the studio.

Now the problem is, what to get rid of to pay for the new amp?

I love SWR, my first serious rig became my last serious rig because it is that awesome and I am that happy every time I use it. 1998 redface bass350, 1998 pebblefront goliath III and son of bertha... only regret, not getting 2 goliath IIIs instead.

recently bought some used cabs, eden 210 and 410 xlts, and an old goliath II JR, so I can mix and match... but mainly because the deals were good =) Never parting with my 1998 SWR stuff

Is there an SWR club, just SWR in general?

*those lazy bandmates (hee hee).

i really did love my swr henry 8x8, it sounded just fantastic, but it was just a bit heavy/bulky @100lbs to wheel around/lift up (on my own) into the back of my suv (xterra's have a high ground clearance) at 3am with no help*.

didn't want to, but sold it, and got some gk neos 212s @55lbs. they're easier to move and sound good too. even though the neos rule, the "hank" might of been one of the best sounding cabs i've ever owned or heard.

i also used to have a workman's 15 combo that really held its own at venues it should not of been able to. great little combo, pumped it out for its size too.

the only bad swr stuff i've heard were the workingmans cabs/heads (seperates) and the LA series ick!

I used a super redhead for a long time.
Great sound, underpowered, "delicate when pushed" speakers.

I'm glad to see SWR has re-worked that amp, and I've been curious as to it's performance since I read of it's release.

Lemmee know how that works?

Sidenote: scored a "just before Fender bought SWR" redhead head only on ebay for $199...just couldn't pass on that.

Losing /lost the love?

I occasionally play in a loud pop/ classic rock, cover band – med. club to small arena gigs. Mainly use a G&L 2500 Tribute (sometimes Ibanez SDGR1000).

Like many others, love the tone but my super redhead really farting bad lately (esp. now w/ 5 string), added a custom design 15” EV cab – no help, last gig could barely hear myself over the drummers’ new DW cannons!

So one thought – replace the 10’s w/ Eminence BP102 to start – seems like a common and inexpensive fix….but what to do about the lack of guts/ projection!! Guitarist suggested just using the preamp section and adding a more robust amp……I’m not much of a techie and looking at the back of combo couldn’t see how I might do that?

Am I expecting too much of this combo w/ this type of band? – thinking of a Sansamp RPM or RBI/ crown XLS 602 or similar, keep the EV15, then later add a 4-10 Aggie, Bergantino, Basson, Schroeder or whatever to move more air.
I have an early 70’s B-15N so don’t need the redhead for a practise unit.

Any thoughts/ advice to keep me from selling it?

during the recent economic downturn (a lot of folks flippin stuff for cash) , i've been buying up some SWR stuff on local craiglist. my recent purchases include a henry 8x8, rare henry junior 4x8, and a goliath II 4x10. all are great cabs. oh, i'm driving with a genz-benz GBE1200. oh yes. the cabs all sound great.

Kinda in the backround, but: recently aquired a 1998 red-faced bass 350 for $200-a steal, I thought!
I took it, and my similar vintage Henry 8x8 to a big outdoor job the other day. I had a TFB500B as backup in case the 350 didn't have the guts; but it did.
The 350/Henry combination is really really nice.
I have $600 in the rig.

Very Cool!

I scored my goliath II 4x10 several years back for cheap, $220, IIRC. Great cabinet alone, and pairs well with a Son of Bertha 1x15 or a Epifani 2x10, all 8 ohm.

My SWR silver face 350 drives any one or two of these very well. Come to think of it, it could do all three, as it can handle 2 ohm loads.

Plenty of SWR love left over here!
