Relayer Bass Makes Debut

Hi there, liked the concept until I saw the price and saw that all you have is Farcebook and no website. Should always have a website first, for details, sound clips, pics, and prices, as well as tech support if needed.

Best of luck with your endeavor...

^ "Farcebook" :roflmao:
That's a new one I'll use. My latest favourite I coined myself has been "Fecal-Brook", due to that "social media" network's heavy flow of male bovine waste material...
There was another good'un I came across recently, but it slips my mind at the moment.

+1 to having a proper website. Far more important to have that than a few "likes".

I think the harshness was caused by this line from their promo material

"The Relayer bass is the first true new innovation in bass".

Well no, it obviously isn't. As well, the wording here is a little lame, since 'innovative' essentially means new so 'new innovation' is redundant. But anyone who objects too loudly is a theorist and doesn't have much experience with marketing. This type of thing attracts attention from the masses. The company isn't looking to sell these to pros exclusively because they would go under if they tried that. They want armchair guys to buy it and people around here are way more sophisticated than the average armchair guy.

Careful, don't unleash the TB wolves upon yourself. I now choose to ignore any hyperbole after merely pointing out some pedal hyperbole (borderline false advertising hyping the pedal) and getting flamed for it by the manufacturer and fanboys. The manufacturer's obvious shilling was distasteful as well... meh! I'll never buy "X" pedal no matter how good it might be — thankfully there are numerous quality alternatives to hyperbole pedal.

However, I can see "new innovation" standing as is though, not redundant wording whether it is innovative or not, because clearly it wouldn't be "the first true 'innovation' in bass". That "first innovation" honour might go to 36' tubes of a pipe-organ, or maybe the gut "frets" on a viola da gamba, or the addition of a 4th-string, or tuning in fourths or fifths or...

In bicycle terms: An old innovation was to use hard rubber around bicycle wheels, a newer innovation was pneumatic tires on bicycle wheels and a "new innovation" for bicycles would be tubeless tires — but not really because that was the case prior to pneumatic tires, the tires were solid rubber and thus "tubeless".

Sorry, just having some fun with word play. To get back on topic...

I guess I can also choose to ignore hyperbole in this case 'cause this armchair guy likes the Relayer bass.

It might have some nice electrics though its selling point is just its look, which is kind of patronising.

If it were actually innovative, it would be better to stick with a traditional design and let the features sell themselves (the design is too much of a distraction), or sell the features to another company.

There are some harsh words going around, though if they want us to read some marketing that is not up to quality, I guess it is justified.

Oh, the TB wolves don't bother me. They can howl for all they're worth. I rarely get involved in this type of stuff, I just happened to see that ad and click on the thread link.

We can agree to disagree about the usage of the phrase 'new innovation'. In your bicycle tire example, the correct usage would be 'past innovation' or 'recent innovation'. All you need to do is look up the root word for 'innovation'. Hint - it's the same as the root for the word 'novel'.

It's advertising, not a doctoral thesis. :rollno:
I think the attitude in this thread is sometimes too harsh. Someone trying to spruik their product and generate interest.
It's really a wonder that anyone bothers to post here. I've seen vendors just drop the discussion and never come back. It's not always the questions, it's the tone.

As the saying goes, "Little dogs bark the loudest."

Here I go barking up the wrong tree again, but I twigged onto something tradernick said. Sorry to branch out from the main topic, I don't mean to sap the attentions of those wishing to discuss the Relayer with rooting out errant advertising language, so I'll just quickly post the following and leave.

Very good @tradernick!
I'll have to disagree to "agree to disagree", though, as I'd rather concede.
While I was aware of the etymology, I was still trying to wrap my head around how to differentiate the innovations — I very much prefer your "past" and "recent" innovations, correct and eloquent all at the same time. Thanks.

Cheers,
FF

Are we really reducing ourselves to nitpicking every last phrase? Give it a rest!

Why can't we try an be supportive of a new venture...I get constructive criticism is necessary and I am sure that valid critiques are actually welcomed, but please can't we keep from just being so mean spirited?

Being supportive of a new venture is fine so long as:
1. it will work; or
2. it doesn't involve my capital investment
3. you don't care about the person on the receiving end of the supportive comments.

I am very happy to give nice warm feedback and make it all shiny, but the truth is, I read the marketing spiel and looked at the photo and though "OMG, what is going? ".

If the marketing people want us to read this stuff and take note, it would be good get some respect and not read things that make our eyes roll.

After writing this however, I have turned a corner and I feel like being supportive.

The Relayer is clearly something new and with out-of-the box thinking that justifies the $3800; the marketing message is clearly objective and true.

I am sold.

Like I said, being critical is fine, pointing out mistakes and offering ways to improve are very important parts of being supportive.

The problem is, several others before you already offered the same criticisms that you echoed in your first contribution to this discussion, you brought nothing new to the table with your first comment.

Then, after several hours...you come back to the thread, nobody commented on your thoughts but you still tried to incite an unprovoked argument with another member about a comment two pages back that had nothing to do with the OP. You were obviously just trolling for an argument.

@TRichardsbass is a working bassist and has been a contributing member here at Talkbass for a long time. I know he values the opinions of his peers and will take any and all criticism that comes his way. I think he got the point about the exaggerated ad copy a page or two ago, it's time to stop piling on.

1. Are you his agent / minder?
2. The existence of TB is predicated on people saying the same thing that everyone else has said; nothing wrong with this though don't endow me with this unique honour. 12 discussion sheets on Active vs Passive is hardly covering new territory.
3. If you like highly subjective marketing spin in your face for a product that you are passionate and knowledgeable about, top of the morning to you - you are different to me; I hate it.
4. You don't like my comments; I don't like your comments - move on.

The innovation comes in a bunch of ways, the body design itself is not the innovation. Just a much different, cooler shape. There are no other basses on the market with this type of passive tone control, period. And I know, I did the research. You are all correct, in that this was a marketing press release. I mean, really, did Ernie Ball really change the game with the "Gamechanger?" Of course not, or at least they could never present it in a press release introducing the instruments. Same here. The Relayer bass is now in production. It DOES have a tonal control that is very innovative. We have to be very careful right now, as it is a distinct advantage for the Relayer bass over all others.

As for putting innovative stuff in a classic design, well, to us, that just makes us one of the gazillion J or P bass clones. Which is not, nor ever will be our or my intention. And how many guys today continue to comment about some of the truly great J and P clones that are better, or have better features, and still all say that its basically still a jazz bass?

Like I said previously, this bass requires non-linear bass thinking. And, well, it is actually very hard to describe exactly what is going on without revealing some proprietary technologies. I understand that it frustrates some, and that it makes some doubt claims. But as one poster said, I've been here a long time. I've owned, if you look at my profile, some of the more innovative instruments ever. And, I also worked for some of the most interesting and innovative builders.

However, I agree, you don't get everything from a press release.

You miss him every day???

Yes Lowness, I do. I think about him a lot. In his last couple of years he and I talked all the time, and we discussed things way beyond instruments. He introduced me to some wonderful singers and music, we discussed at length retirement, social security, and choice of where to retire, we discussed how a boy who grew up and lived his entire life in the Santa Barbara area would choose to move not only all the way to the other coast, but chose one of the coldest states in the US to live. Phil Kubicki was sooo much more then just one of the greatest guitar and bass builders ever.

Thank you for your words. As a long time TBer, I don't run away. I love the engagement. But yes, your point is great. Its advertising, not a doctoral thesis. Thank you.

Having said that, I too have noticed that vendors tend to run away or ignore the posts. I defend my bass, and don't run from the discussion. Criticisms may help us look at other things, or see something we didn't realize. And I am always glad to provide some additional information to help it along.

However, I am sure that someone here will let me know that they can do the same with their Rondo bass.... ;-)

Thanks Double E. I appreciate it. However, this thread clearly is less mean spirited, when compared to any post on the Amp forum...LOL!

I find that when discussion gets to this level, it is driven by something deeper. I've never experienced anything that deep, so I don't always understand it. But I don't dismiss it. I think my answer to that quote above should silence the critics. And explain my feelings.

Honestly, have you ever watched a commercial for a new model car? Now I'm not saying this is the same, but it is an introduction. You have more questions? Want to see or learn more? Then the press release has done all that can be asked of it.

I will correct you though, the price is $3450 USD. And, I will tell you that it is less than all the boutique J and P bass clone makers starting prices, and comes with some other case and case candy included that the other builders charge additional for. Yes, this bass is not an import, nor is it made on some foreign assembly line. This is a hand built bass from one of the respected but relatively unkown builders in Canada. And it includes high end components, like Nordstrand MM4.4 quad coil pickups, top of the line Hipshot tuning system, hand selected woods, and of course the proprietary tone circuit (which required a ton of R&D and time to perfect.)

Value is something subjective to everyone. So if this isn't in your price comfort zone, then its not for you. Which is more then okay, as I understand that completely.

My apologies for the inability to keep from contributing to the thread derail by responding to that antagonistic post. I know you are fully capable of speaking for yourself.

Hey Alaska!

Well, the website is being redone and so it will not be ready for a bit. And, like many of the builders out there, the use of Facebook and other social media sites is becoming a replacement for most of the website stuff. Very few humans go to websites anymore for most things. There are a gazillion "bloggers" out there who don't own their own domains nor have their own website.

However, point taken, and we will expedite the website update/upgrade.

I was thinking about the post regarding Scarlett amps a couple of years back. Some people just have to have the last word.

The comment about price in this thread is really out of bounds. I've never heard of the bass, or tried it, and I don't know anything about it, but it is too expensive because I say so. :rollno:
