Relayer Bass Makes Debut

I hope you are not claiming any boost capabilities, because you cannot boost with passive, of course.

No claims of mid boost, just actual mid control. But that is a simplification of what this bass does and can do. It is often hard to express, without going into technical details, how this bass tonal control works, especially in that it is a completely passive bass. It is NOT your typical tone control, not like you would think on an active system with a treb/mid/bass boost. Its not that linear. However we have proprietary circuits in the bass that allow us to manipulate tone using a variety of means.

Hey Roger! Actually, no. First, this is completely passive bass. No active. Second, of course, it is more then just a 3 band eq. If I wanted to compare this to anything in the EBMM line, it would be closer to the Game Changer without having to use computers to manipulate all your sounds. And, of course, ours is all analog, not digital.

Thanks for replying!

The passive EBMM Sub is passive too. Was short lived but i have one and it is great. Has a passive 2 band EQ.

Doesn't do anything more than that though.

I realize this is a relatively new product but are there any videos posted where the bass is demo'ed going through its paces? I'm interested in how your passive system sounds active and like to hear it.

At the moment, Davis Guitars is working on some video and sound clips of the Relayer bass. I am going to record some video and audio this weekend, and hopefully have it up on YouTube by next week. Jaymi Millard, Nashville based bass player and member of the #1 Indie rock group Innocent Monday will have a Relayer in his signature pink color within two weeks, and he will also be posting lots of video and sound along with live performance video. So stay tuned!

Oh. That means in addition to whatever would be a typical tone cap, or not, you have some sort of coil or choke matrix, along with its necessary resistor and capacitor bridging to tailor the response curve, which would be your refinement or variation on another old idea, the Gibson Vari-tone or the Bill Lawrence Q-filter.

What we are all peeved about is your marketing tries to imply that this is the newest thing since sliced bread, when it is not. We would all be more impressed if you acknowledged your predecessors' developments, and then explained why you consider yours to be better instead of all the marketing b^!!&#!+.

It is hard to explain in a marketing and press release all the nuance of any instrument, especially the Relayer Bass. Tonal production and control is not done in the linear thought process that we bass players are used to, that of the bass/mid/treble pots. So while the release does talk about mid control, this bass does not have a bass/treble/mid knob(s). While it does have a traditional tone pot, that is truly secondary to the rest of the circuit design.

However, I appreciate your comments and attention to the press release and for looking at my personal bass, the Relayer Bass by Davis Guitars.

I think if you want to sell it you should learn how to describe it.

All this sounds very vague and gimmicky right now no matter how innovative it might be in actuality.

You are experienced enough with TB and have commented often enough on other products to know how this works.

Studio, yes I am experienced enough here to know the TB crowd. For example Josef posted a price above, which in true TB fashion is meant to be derogatory and it is misleading. The $4300 price is not in US dollars. It is Canadian dollars.

There is still some final intellectual property irems outstanding, and of course this is a press release. Pretty sure no other company puts every detail in the press release.

But thanks for taking time to read and ask.

Yeah. I'm wondering why spend that much rather than track down a Kubicki (which I would love to have).

First, since the price was not in the release, the direct price for this model is $3450 USD. The price Josef posted is in Canadian dollars. As TBers know this price sits just below the other small premium builders and is competitive.

This bass is very different then a Kubicki overall. It does have a similar feature in the extended E string, but nothing else really. There is only one bass on the market that can do tonal control in a similar manner, but it is active and requires additional interfaces.

I loved Phil's work, and chasing down a Kubicki, while they are still relatively inexpensive, is always a great idea. I know one shop that has a nice reverse blue burst as we speak.

Thanks for your comment.

Impossible, Spock has gone to Sha Ka Ree and won't be coming back.

Very cool looking bass, the Relayer. I like Kubickis too, but they each have their own vibe, IMO.

Best wishes to you and this endeavour, TRichardsbass.

Thank you for the kind words. This started as just a single build for me, but as it progressed it became something better and bigger.

I'm excited about anything that is a true innovation. Anymore it seems that true innovation is hard to come by. You certainly don't see it coming from our six stringed cousins.

It's quite a bit out of my price range. But, I'm still excited to learn more about it and one day see it in action.
Thanks for the kind words.

The price is $3450 USD, not the $4300 previously posted. That was a Canadian dollars conversion.
