Relocating to Denmark?

FWIW....In my part of Europe, musicians from North America are highly regarded. For rock and roll, an experieinced player gets some respect for this. Don't ask why.

My musician friends from Canada and the states do very very well teching, earning $50 for 1/2 lessons. Most of the guys have 25-30 students. Good side cash.

Gigging musicians earn between $300-$700 per guy per night.

Some neighbors of mine, a young married couple and their baby daughter, emigrated to Denmark about four or five years ago. IIRC, I think their destination might've been Aarhus. The wife was originally from Denmark, and the husband, a US native, did materials and logistics for construction. Her father happened to own a construction company in Denmark, so he had a job offer in place.

Have you seen the smash hit "Jersey Shore" on MTV? The cast would be Bennys...

Basically it's a term used for non resident / tourists to the Monmouth and Northern Ocean County beaches. Not sure of the origins... some say it's for "Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark, and New York" other for the "beneficial sun rays" early visitors were after, others say slang for affluent business class NYC Jews that had the money to vacation down this way.

Further south than my area they tourists are known by "Shoobie" which was coined for the early 1900 day trippers that would bring their lunch down in shoe boxes instead of spending money in the local markets.


Being a North Jersey guy that grew up vacationing "down the Shore", I relocated here in my early 20s. I live 12 miles inland from the boardwalk "Jersey Shore" is filmed at. I have no problem with the tourists, I just have to travel the Garden State Parkway for about 35 miles each way for work and the 'Benny Traffic' makes at least one trip a weekend each summer take up to 3 times longer.

I would move there just to be closer to the Danish Womens Curling team.

I migrated to Europe,,ended up in Norway. Been to Denmark a bunch of times,,played music there,,they really loved my American blues (we get it from childhood). The Danes are really cool people. Their language has some strange sounds though (that potato in the throught sound). And they count in twenties,,before I understood the counting system i used to give more than enough money at the store. For example; "Tre og halv fems" means 93. Because Fems means "Five Twenties". "halv fems " means five twenties minus ten. so,,three plus half five twenties. "Tres" is 60 (tres is three). Fem og halv tres is 55,,crazy system huh?

I didn't know this! That does indeed sound crazy (or needlessly complicated) but it's a whole lot less confusing when you simply memorise the numbers instead of doing the math in your head every time. Just like I doubt you don't figure out that "ninety" equals "nine times ten" every time you use the value.

true, if danish is your native tongue or if you have lived there for a while,,but me:confused:i have to stand for a minute and think about the numbers,,but the language is not so different from Norwegian. If english is your native tongue than the scandinavian languages are not so hard to learn.

Sorry, just a little digression......

I saw Italy mentioned. I'm italian, raised here, and won't die here.


To the OP: go to Denmark, or some other civilized country (all northern Europe will be fine, as far as i know).


But if you want to pay close to 50% of taxes and then get nothing in return..... or if you want to go to a place where you won't find work (ESPECIALLY as a musician)...... of want to stay in a financially and legally and politically disrupted country: come to Italy ....... ;)



PS: go to Denmark ...... ;)

I will check it out later... this work laptop has a broke headphone jack.

As an update, I've been chatting with an ex-girlfriend who has spent her adult life as an American living away from the USA. She's currently in NZ and just took a job in Abu dhabi (she's a mathematician of some sort). She told me to read "A Year in Provence" by Peter Mayle.
