REM calls it a day

REM is a great band. I have loved their music ever since I saw them play at the 40 Watt in Athens years ago. Automatic for the People is by far one of my all time favorite albums.
I am sure that they are all going off to pursue their individual projects and in a few years they will come back together along with Bill Berry and do an big reunion tour.

They broke up so Michael Stipe could pursue his Hollywood dreams...he'll be playing Skeletor in the new Masters of the Universe movie. j/k. I haven't cared for them since the early/mid-90s. However, I can relate to someone never having seen one of their favorite (if not favorite) bands live. For me, it would be the Afghan Whigs. Huge fan since first hearing them in High School. So, I'm sorry that you didn't get a chance to see them, but as mentioned by others above, you'll probably get lucky and catch them in a few years when they get back together for some reason or another.

They had some music that I thought was OK but I honestly wasn't really a fan. I don't turn the dial if it comes on the radio but I also never bought an album or downloaded a track. I'm not knocking their music or musicianship. It just never appealed to me.

This is news because they had a resurgence over the last five years or so - two or three new albums came out and did OK, got attention in the press again, etc. if this had been announced 5-10 years ago, no one would have noticed as they were in a slump. So it's weird timing for a breakup.

I'm not shedding any tears. It's one of those bands I respected, they had a few songs I knew and liked, but I was never any big REM fan.
