I was offered a really good deal on a pristine hofner ignition bass, but I don't like the new sunburst finishes. I was thinking about removing it and doing violin varnish or maybe tru oil or something. How difficult do you think this would be for a beginner (the stripping part)? Do they still use nitro?

Also I have another bass i am looking at, one of those japanese eko style violin basses with the scroll head, wanted to do the same. That's probably nitro, right?

I also am not a fan of the Sunburst on my Hofner Ignition. I like the light weight and playability of the bass but really never was a fan of sunburst color schemes. Still, at the time I bought it the only other option was black which is worse IMO.

I'd love to repaint it but just don't have the nerve to try. They came out with a "baby blue" one but do you think I can find one of those to buy? Can't find anything on the 'net about people repainting one. I'm a color guy but think I'd mess it up since it has that binding too.

Ignition basses are shot in poly. It's going to be tough going plus the plywood veneers are very thin, you stand a good chance of sanding through the top veneer.
