Removing stuck tuner key/machine ferrules

I just bought an 80’s Japanese Jazz Special where the original owner had swapped the original neck with a fretless one but kept the original ferrules. He did include some 18mm but upon trying to install them using the socket/clamp method, they won’t go in and are now stuck very tight.


I would use a socket/clamp method to get them out but the bottom hole is smaller diameter at the bottom than it is at the top. Not sure what they call it but it looks tapered. It takes a smaller diameter socket to go through but then it’s not big enough to push the ferrules out.


Thanks for ideas as I’d love to do it myself!

A flat blade screwdriver, go into the back of the headstock align the screwdriver along the edge of the ferrel (12 o'clock) and tap with a hammer, goto the opposite side of the ferrel (6 o'clock) and tap again. Then 3, 9; 1, 7; 4, 10; etc until the ferrel pops loose.
