Double Bass Remvoing paint from a double-bass

I have come into possession of a 1/2 size double-bass. Unfortunately, it has been painted with a thick layer of white paint.

I am looking for suggestions on removing a thick layer of white paint from double bass without damaging the underlying finish.

I do not know how to determine what type of paint it is. So pointers on figuring that out that could be helpful as well.

I am also not sure what condition the underlying finish is in, apart from "covered with a thick layer of white paint".

I suggest doing a trial with just a cloth moistened with hot water in an inconspicuous area like the ribs adjacent to the end pin. Then try rubbing it with your fingers.

If it is latex paint it will soften and peal away. I had to do a bass that was painted. But the method I described let me remove all the paint and preserve the original varnish.

If its not latex you will need to seek other advice. But start with the simplest, least caustic method and see if you get the paint to budge.
