I messaged them but the response wasn't too encouraging, being in England it looks like my options are fix it myself or find someone local to have a try. Not sure I want to pay someone to troubleshoot when they could spend days on it and still not fix it so I guess it's down to me.

after about 8 years of fretting about it - no pun intended - I finally changed the acousticores on my RB5F out for TI jazz flats. I adore the sound of the acousticores on the ren, i love the low tension, but the windings immediately rust, scrape gunk off my fingers and into the strings (even when i put on a fresh pack a few years ago, within a few minutes of playing you could feel the crud) and cut grooves into the fingerboard, and it feels like a bit more damage than I can handle, even with regular cleaning - it had me playing my favorite instrument far less, and that's simply unacceptable! I'm still letting 'em break in, but i'm having a blast, and am excited to put 'em to the test at a gig in a few weeks.

Filled-in with some guys yesterday afternoon at a patio gig down at Smith Mountain Lake... perfect weather, nice place. Home

I split the sets with my old '67 Guild Starfire bass and the Turner Electroline fretless. My old Mesa WalkAbout Scout here... still gets the job done.

The Turner Renaissance 5 fretless got a good run playing for a contra dance last night near Buchanan, Virginia.

So what we got here...

Well... like I said, the Renaissance 5-string with AcoustiCores, fed to a Broughton Resonant Lowpass Filter, Boss Bass Chorus, and then a Boss Acoustic Simulator. The last one is really a guitar pedal, but it does some pretty interesting things to the eq curve on the Renaissance. (the last pedal, the silver one, if you're curious, is a Boss Synth... it's fun to mess with, but utterly useless for anything I ever play)

Anyway, I enjoyed hanging out with the old Sun Lion. Might play it again next weekend.

I think so, yes. Waaaaay, waaay back in our Club Thread here, Rick actually weighed in on those when they first went into production. Lemesee if I can find that post for you. Standby, might take a few. 😉

I like it. 😎 I forget which model EL-535 yours is RV... mine has a stacked tone set with the lower concentric for treble roll-off on the magnetic pickups, and the upper one for the piezo saddles.

I'm pretty sure the red one was like this too, but the knobs configured like yours. 🤔 It's been a while though.

Just 'cause we're talkin' about 'em... I've got the fretless Electroline loaded for a Christmas concert Sunday afternoon. I'll be using it alternately with another favorite, the Guild Starfire bass.

Maybe I oughta' stick some of those Raytheon witch-hats on the black EL-434. 🤔

*Just a little hat-tip to RV's custom knobs there... those are machined out of wood with a gold accent inlay. Very cool. I had them on an old Series guitar I got from him a while back! Can't remember the source.

There ya' go! 😎 I really liked those on that old guitar. They looked so much like the original Raytheons that until you looked a little bit closer and saw the extra detail and realized what you were seeing.

Something prompted me to look a while back, some guitar had turned up with Grey witch-hats. Raytheon still produces a whole line of mil-spec knobs in a variety of shapes and styles. This supply house has a bunch of them- Raytheon & National Knobs | Surplus Sales of Nebraska

It's memorabilia pricing... but it isn't over the moon either when you consider what a new one costs. And it's the real thing too. Johnny-Mac actually played this one, quite a bit.
