+1 on your recommendation. Only I will amend your description by saying that the sound is determined as much by the Alnico II magnets as by the coils.
Anyone who knows better, please correct me; but I believe that 1957 Precision Bass pickups were made with Alnico V magnets.
Believing that to be true, my further belief of several years has been that Seymour Duncan designed the Antiquity P-Bass pickup (model 101144-11) to sound like something old: based on the original, but as it would be heard through the filters of distant recollection and old recordings. It is an example of what I call a "romantic" sound.
Still, it could be true that 1957 Precision Bass pickups were less bright sounding than ones made in the ensuing few years. I don't know from personal experience.
What I do know, just in case it is representative, is that the Klein 1959 Epic Series Precision Bass pickup, though not a bright pickup, is very articulate and has fantastic "zing".
