So right now I have an American special p bass (honeyburst model) and I really like it! But the pickup seems to be a little lacking and slightly boomy, I really prefer hotter pickups. I was wondering what some good suggestions are, I was considering these models

    Seymour Duncan spb4
    Seymour Duncan spb1
(Heard the spb3 has lots of lows so I'm not sure about that one)

Dimarzio p pickup (the hotter wound model, can't remember the name)

    Mojotone 70s p pickup

Would like to keep it passive

Some examples of the tones I like

    Similar to those.

hi jel. i use the two you havn't got on your list, the spb2 and the spb3 ( quarter pounder) i like the lows and use flats. when i first put the spb3 on my p bass i had new stainless rounds on and it was way too lively even with the tone pulled back so you may find its ok for you.anyway you will find a pup you like for sure. hot is the way to go for me. my regular unhot basses get left on the wall now as they seem like hard work. let us know how you get on with your pups coz i will heat up my other basses.
    cheers

Those are some good suggestions, any feedback on the PUs I listed?

The Duncan SPB-1 is an awesome pickup, if you are looking for the vintage vibe.

The Dimarzio Model P is great as well, if you are looking for a hot-in-your-face P pickup.

I get tone like that from the good old Fender '62 RI's and a pick.

I much prefer finger style but aren't the 62 RI PUs basically what I have now? (Standard vintage Alnico)

Are the model Ps anything like the dimarzios from the hamer blitz bass? I think they were called hammer slammers or something like that.

I also play finger-style but to get the tone that is in those clips you provided, I would use a pick. I am not sure what is in the American Specials (although I do have one!), I believe that the '62's are indeed Alnico.

Well I seem to be leaning more towards the Model P and the SPB4, I thnk the SD may be hotter. the spb4 is a 13k, where i think the model p is a 11-12

I was (still am) in the same boat and started this thread:http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f38/08-11-p-bass-pickups-989062/

A lot of people made a lot of great suggestions and it's worth the time to read through it.

I ended up strapped for time lately, so I haven't done anything about it. I started thinking that the first thing I would try is just getting rid of the "greasebucket" tone control and rewiring the bass with a standard tone control, but change the volume and tone pots to 500K. This will result in a hotter, brighter sound but it may not be as hot as what you're looking for. I'm going to start there, because it's the simplest and cheapest route... just as soon as I find some time!
