Replacement speaker for combo Gallien-Krueger MB112 ?

Hi!

I have a problem with a speaker in my Gallien-Krueger MB112 combo. The speaker rattles, especially on lower volume and on low E. When I mute the edge of the driver with a finger the sound becomes clean. I am trying to find some service to get the problem fixed, but I am afraid I need some replacement speaker for it.

Could you please give me an advice, which replacement speaker would be the best for this combo?

MB112 is 1x12" with 200 W into 4 Ohm
Unfortunately I cannot find a proper 4 Ohm neo speaker on the market, but there are some 8 Ohm ones like:

1) Eminence Basslite S2012 with 150W to 8 Ohm, Xmax 5.2 mm: Speaker Detail | Eminence Speaker

2) Celestion Green Label BN12-300X with 300W to 8 Ohm, Xmax 4mm Invalid Link Removed

Would any of these work for my purpose? Could you recommend another one?

Thank you!

Welcome to the "what's happened to GK customer service?" club.
I sent few mail about a replacement for a speaker in my MB212 (it seems a common issue, mine gave way without reasons and the speakers are not damaged at all) without any kind of answer.
They may produce quality amps, but what's the point if when I have issues they're not there to answer ?

Too bad :(

Overall I like MB112 - it's light and loud enough, but unfortunately it's useless at low volumes because of the rattling issue. Nevertheless I play club gigs with it, when gain is set to 50% or more it sounds ok. Hopefully I will get it fixed even with replacement speaker.

I wonder if its the lighweight grille that is rattling. Mine will do that at certain frequencies. I might put some sticky felt around the edges. Part of the tradeoff for an ultralight amp I suppose.

No, that's not grill, I took the grill off and checked all screws - it still rattles. The fact it stop rattling if I put a finger at the edge of paper cone makes me think it's a driver. Maybe something touches the cone from inside...

Keep in mind that the stock driver has only moderate sensitivity. A higher sensitivity 8 ohm driver could easily go just as loud as (or louder than) the stock 4 ohm driver. Also consider that some nominal 8 ohm drivers are really as close to 4 ohms as to 8 ohms. Examples include the Deltalite 2512 and the Beta 12a. The Beta will be at least as loud as the stock driver, and the Deltalite will be louder. The Beta will sound similar to the stock driver - prominent mid-bass and a little thumpy. The Deltalite will be more articulate, with less prominent mid-bass, but deeper bass extension. As 12 inch drivers go, these are pretty full range (good on-axis to around 4kHz for the Deltalite and 3.5kHz for the Beta).

+1

If this is the 200 watt combo I would also include the Basslite S2012 in the list of possibilities. Not as much uppermid cut as the Deltalite, a little warmer but just as deep and loud. Also friendly towards varying common enclosure sizes and tunings.

I would compare the cost of those 3 drivers to the cost of a recone or replacement from GK. I would also propose you will be able to cover more gigs and get more flexibility out of the combo by installing an 8ohm speaker and an ext. cab jack.....expandability. May be worth the price.

If it's under warranty, of course, use the warranty.

BTW the stock speaker is Gallien Krueger 082-0590-A and they sell it now @ Thomann [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I cannot find any specs for this speaker in internet though...

To get this one would be safe soulution but I am still looking for some alternative.

So finally I have ordered the original replacement speaker from GK. Thanks for your tips anyway!

It looks that that in the current speaker some connection between moving coil and paper cone has been broken - it rattles even without the box and sometimes it shuts up completely until I poke it with finger, then it starts rattling again. Most likely reason was that I used this combo in quite extreme conditions... Will try to be more careful with new one.

So I ordered a speaker replacement from GK. I was happy to see the the speaker that they sent was an Eminence. I think it sounds better. The other speaker had not markings so my guess is that it was made by GK.

Eminence has made OEM speakers for G-K and still makes the OEM ceramic magnet speakers for at least the RBH series. So no way to know if the original was Eminence manufacture (unless you find a number 67-???? printed somewhere on the old one).

Your GK is not a neo speaker so I'd go with this one; https://usspeaker.com/Eminence Delta 12LFC-1.htm
