The nut on my Fender Jazz was shaved down by the previous owner and its pretty noticeable. How easy is it to replace. How much should I expect to pay for a new nut?
Well, you generally buy a blank, and file slots in it for your strings. If you're doing it yourself, a blank is pretty cheap.. around $5 ordered online, probably a few bucks more in a local shop. How easy to replace depends on your skill level. Best bet is probably to just ask at a reputable shop in your area. I wouldn't expect it to be too expensive.
Are you getting a buzz on open strings? That's the only reason I would want to have a higher nut, otherwise, the lower the better IMO.
