I was really hoping for a hot-rodded Fender Jazz tone when I bought my Guild Advanced Pilot on EbaY. However, when I play the bass, I just can't get any flat or really fat tone with the P/J Bartolini setup on this bass. I also tend to play with an aggressive right-hand finger style; and even when I try to play "gently" (which isn't my druthers for rock), I get a lot of clacking - which I imagine is great for tap and slap, which I however don't really do well.
This bass has so much treble - even with the tone knob way down, and even with TI jazz flats installed - and I would prefer not to play flatwounds in the first place. There is also a small but noticeable hum from somewhere, and I can't get the Pups down, as the screws appear to be as far down as they go - which still leaves the Pups pretty high at about 2/3" at the bridge.
If some of you have experience with the Advanced Pilot, can you tell me if this is characteristic of this bass - or did I inherit an abused child?
I have tried a Sweet T tube DI with a built in limiter, which helped a little bit, at the expense of rolling off the highs. I was hoping to avoid having to depend on a compressor or limiter as a solution.
Is there something that can be done with the existing Bart electronics to offer a more growly, woolly vintage tone, short of replacing them?
If I must replace the P/J electronic setup, I would think of either Sadowsky or Alembic; off the top of my head. Has anyone also had any experience swapping the Barts out with any other electronics? If so, what do you all think would work best with my SWR hybrid amps (Mo' Bass, SM900, SM500)?
Other than the clacky tone, I really like the neck, balance and weight of the bass; so I'm willing to try to work with it.
