respeakering a sunn cab

i recently got a sunn 1X15 cab and it sounds like the speakers on its way out, i need something around 4ohms and 400watt what would you recomend i use to replace the old speaker? also my amp can handle a 2ohm load and i have another 4ohm cab would it be okay to use a 8ohm cab with that and make a 6ohmish load?

Get the driver reconed.

Throwing any 15" with inappropriate specs for the box and porting may in fact damage the new driver.

Do a search on replacement in this forum; you'll find several threads in the last few eeeks explaining the why's and wherefores.

people put a lot of stress on this kind of thing.

keep the original? get a new one?

does the cab size dictate the speaker and which will sound good?

experiment.

did you like the old one?
what's in cab's you like?
what brands have you enjoyed in the past?

do what ya feel like. eminence's are pretty good. peavey black widow's too.

And there are extremely good reasons why.

Yes. And which will work properly and not be damaged.
experiment.
No.
did you like the old one?
If so, get it reconed.

Irrelevant as saying "I like EV's" means nothing. An EVM15L is a great driver, in the right enclosure, but a poor performenr in the wrong one.

Sure, do what you feel like. But there are very good reasons, not least of which is cost, for doing it correctly. Eminence make a huge range of different drivers, so any random Eminenece is not likely to work in the box. An enclosure that is right for a 2515 is far from correct for a 3015LF. Neither of which are correct for a BW (which BW?).

I have had good luck with the Carvin psc15 cast frame woofer. They are actually made by Eminence. Come in 4 or 8 ohm and are 600 watts for only 99.99 plus 10.99 shipping but if you want to stick to original sound and tone you should do some research and see what was origianlly in there or even go for a recone job on them which is usually less than a replacement speaker.

the speaker has already been replaced in this and the one atm sounds like its on the way out, you know the kinda sound pots make when there dirty kinda scratchy noise? it makes that kinda noise randomly after a while its pretty annoying and im not sure whats causing it i've checked all the wiring but i dunno i'll have a look into the speakers mentioned thanks for the help!

btw the current speaker is an Altec 421A 15" sounds really good until it starts cutting out, and i'm not overpowering it so not sure what it could be apart from the speaker the dimensions of the cab are 24"X24"X15" if thats any help

When you push gently on the cone, does it move smoothly or is there an abrasive feeling? If the latter, the coil is rubbing and will eventually fail.

When I looked up the Specs for the Altec 421A it said it was only a 50 watts rms and 100 watts program speaker. You had said that you wanted something close to 400 watts so this speaker defiantly isnt it. From your description it sounds to me that the voice coil is failing or getting ready to melt. I actually have melted all three out of four voice coils in my ampeg 4x10 speaker cab at one time but I defiantly was pushing it too hard.

You don't want to blow that 421 - they are difficult to get reconed. ... and 50 watts is about right - they are fragile.

It is important to note that Sunn used a whole bunch of drivers over time. While it is correct that you should determine the available gross volume in the cab and the porting, then make a determination as to the most appropriate driver - is the best theoretical approach - Conrad wasn't near that specific when he was originally building that box.

You'll get decent results out of most old style 15's, assuming htat we are talking Musical Instrument bass specific drivers. D/E/K 140, EV 15B, etc ...

i see not overheating or something the speaker doesn't feel as though its grating when i push in the cone what else could it be?
Could be some glued parts aging and coming apart, damaged spider or something else. Bit hard to diagnose this far away. Take it to a speaker specialist.
