The difference between "it" (my post's content) being noticed and ME being noticed is vast. I am not a post, and the part of my post about you was not about me.

If you had just typed "the post" between "You used my name to get" and "noticed", we'd have moved on by now with absolutely no further misunderstandings. But "get noticed" has an entirely different connotation. We both know that. Now that you know it's not applicable here, I hope you'll quit posting as tho it is.

Your posts in that thread were borderline officious, and your coming back at me when you've already admitted to being "terse" is just plain wrong. I'm seeking not a damn thing but straight info for young players and posters who are honest, regardless of what they play or how long or how well.

With respect to Mel, I have to admit that in his own unique style, he did have solid value and wisdom in life counseling in terms of having a professional career in music, ....I believe he would of been pissed if any of his students wasted time on arguing over "respect" in the cyber world. He would of made that very clear that's for sure!

It's no secret. Parker, Mingus, Miles, Jaco, ect, the circumstances surrounding their deaths are pretty much public domain. Mel Graves was on thier level as a musician, imo. Chuck referred to Mel as not being with us....some people who don't know Mel or who lost contact with him might like to know why. His obit is published up in the Bassists Forum.

btw, it's "bated" not "baited". 'nuff about that

Jamie, honestly, you're either extraordinarily dense, malicious, disingenuous, or some combination of the three. Here, once again, you pretend (giving you the benefit of the doubt) not to understand the main point. I think you actually do understand but I'll make it explicit anyway. It's not so much a matter of where PW posted that information. It's more about how you chose to use it and when. Let me say that again. It's more about how you chose to use it and when. You brought his personal misfortune up in a context in which it was irrelevant and used it as a shiv that you could stick into him. Not cool. Not nice. Not appropriate. Not respectful.

I agree with the essence of PW's sentiments about anonymous posting but I disagree with regard to the conditions he places on it. I've explained earlier why I choose not to have my username be my real name. Paul and most of the regulars know exactly who I am.

In this thread we had some good conversation on the concept of "respect" at TB. We've seen some demonstrations of how to earn it, how to keep it, how to p*** it away, and how to never get it at all.

I'm going to suggest that all this personal sniping that has occupied most of the last few pages -- from all sides -- is falling into the p*** it away/never get it at all side of the ledger. Enough!

Otis and 'Retha sang about respect. So did the Staples Singers. We've mentioned metaphor in this thread. Borrowing a metaphor from the Staples, I say we've got a few people here who are cussin' round women when they don't even know their names, who aren't covering their mouths when they cough. Respect yourself! It all starts with simple manners, people.

I'm pretty sure you folks know who you are. Why don't you give it a rest already?

To this I would add that the forum's Ignore List is a wonderful feature for those who choose to use it. For those who don't know how to use it, Here's a walkthrough on another forum that uses vBulletin software.

If I think someone's annoying in real life, I generally ignore them. If the person is actually a troll, this will make them very unhappy, since trolls desire attention more than anything; many actually prefer negative attention. If they're not really a troll, but still annoying as hell to you, putting them on the IL will keep you from having to deal with them, and make your forum experience more enjoyable. Just my .02c.

Truth be told, I think the participants here have done a fine job of "policing" the thread without intervention from the moderators. The snipers have been responded to in what, IMO, has been an appropriate and dispassionate manner. They didn't gain much traction at all. There was no degeneration into a flame war or a tit-for-tat of the hurling of personal insults. Such would have warranted intervention on the part of the mods.

I'll just repeat here what I told drurb in PM. I don't disagree with the gist of what he says. I'll only point out that what I posted was a comment from a mod. You would definitely have known if it was an intervention from a mod. When the whistle gets blown and the penalties get handed out, there won't be any mistaking it.
