Double Bass Respect What is it? How do you earn it? (DB Forum thread)

drurb said:
Thank you for posting this. Here's my view. Sometimes folks do post their opinions without explanation. That shouldn't, necessarily, be taken as condescending. I'm very confident that if you asked Eric for the basis of his statement, he'd give you a fine answer. You really can't expect people posting here to give chapter and verse on the basis of their opinions every time. I disagree that people, when asked (in a cordial fashion) rarely will explain the basis of their statements.

I'm not blind to the fact that regulars here can give responses that are ill-considered. Mea culpa... I've sure done it. We're all human.

I just don't see condescension as a general attribute of what goes on here, especially as concerns newbies. Of course, you may see it differently.

I can only hope that we'll all try to do a bit better in this regard. There are some rotten ones but, in my opinion, this is a barrel of some really fine apples.

Thank you, Les. I was considering what if anything to say here, and you said it for me. I was pretty terse in the "why jazz isn't popular" thread. Generally, I try and help people with good info and add to the positive flow when I can. I just didn't have the energy to spell it all out in what some would consider a more informative and constructive way in that thread. Maybe I should have just stayed out of it, but I think even in my abruptness, I brought out a few valid points to consider.

Eric, I wasn't "calling YOU out", so much as illustrating some of what the thread devolved into. There was a lot of it and some of it (most of it) was from the "undanceable/too many notes/music, not ego" guys. Those guys can be ignored. But IMO, respected posters are held to a different standard or maybe ought to be.

My post was long enough as it was and frankly, without my using someone's name, I think it would have gone unnoticed. I could have used the name of the poster who checks profiles for a double bass before responding to something he wasn't personally asked, but I know that would have been responded to with inappropriate humor, as the poster (who I'm sure is a far better player than I) in question seems to deal in laughs.

Peace to you and the rest of the forum.

done in typical OCD fashion. :D
Meaning what?
It's a metaphor.
Meaning what?
first a question for you Don......were you a TB Moderator at one time?
Yes.
Are you going to answer my question?
Don, I think you know better than to push this then.....and I'm surprised that former mods aren't required to disclose that kind of info in their profiles. So be it then..... you never can really know who is posting, even if they use their real life name.

It's a good thread, and it's a good thing that it was moved here, imo.
Nice try.
One more time:
done in typical OCD fashion. :D
Meaning what?

Ocular Deprived Discernment

That would be "ODD." Try again. I'm sure this need not be spelled out but Don is asking what you meant by referring to the post as being made in "typical" obsessive compulsive disorder "fashion."

Rather than ducking the question, answer him. Have the courage to stand by and explain your statement or simply admit an error and move on. That would be the respectful thing to do.

This thread, and the bar metaphor in particular, remind me of attending sessions when I was a young pup.

In those days, someone who exhibited unabashed snarkiness and blatant disrespect would have been put in their place and, if they persisted, shown the door - sometimes forcefully.

Here on TB, individual members have the option of adding such trolls to their "ignore" lists (an option for which I remain thankful). But, few are shown the door. Pity.

But, you did call me out...I'm not complaining, but why should so called "respected posters" be held to some different standard? Are they getting paid for their time sharing their ideas and expertise, whatever that may be? You used my name to get noticed? Glad to be of use to you. :rollno:

Jamie instead of taking Denny's jazz workshop class next time, you should see if he can fit you in his "Control Mastery Group." It says on the UCSF website that he's taking new patients. Your mentor Mel, after reading this thread, would surely of recommended that to you if he were still with us.

We'd all be pretty surprised to see a list of jazz luminaries who have gone to Denny's for counseling, he's helped a lot of people, we owe Denny for being true mentor of Jazz ........Mel died of pancreatic cancer. Not pretty. Other than role modeling how *not* to live or behave, sorta like Mingus, he didn't have any counseling talent, none whatsoever, imo.

it's a good thread.

But, you did call me out...I'm not complaining, but why should so called "respected posters" be held to some different standard?

I don't know... I just think patience... Hell, I'm just hoping young players don't shy away from here, and I really hope the feeling if they DO shy away isn't one of "they don't belong if they haven't been subjected to (people who see themselves as) ballbusters".

You used my name to get noticed?

I directly quoted you and two other posters to draw attention to the content of my post. To get noticed? lol, please. We both know those are different things, and it's intellectually dishonest of you to imply otherwise.

You're making it sound like you were sought out for the purpose. That's not true and I said as much by pointing out the extreme (to me) length of my post as it was and the fact that there were plenty of other exchanges that fit the same mold. In fact, I briefly participated in the exchange I mentioned, and toward the end, said a bit of what I said here.

I didn't have a dog in that Buble = =/= jazz debate, but if I did, I'd have something concrete to hang it on before I told someone else on a message board that he wasn't. And I'd let them in on whatever concrete evidence I had.

Very few threads i've read over the years have actually demonstrated in real time, what the OP has asked. i.e., respect and/or the lack of it, and anonymous posters v.s. posters who post under their real names, like this thread has. After a brief glance back on this thread, IMO, the real name posters are getting the biggest amount of jive, cheap shots, and troll-like shots taken at them by anonymous posters.
Again, IMO, the posters who I feel deserve the most respect judging from their history, profiles, helping other players and actual video and audio clips of them posted here @ TBDB are getting the most flack from those who we really aren't sure exist in the real world of music.
I think that's a glaring and obvious negative reflection on those who choose not to post under their real names.
At the risk of name calling, IMO, it's pretty chicken ****. :eyebrow:

Mel died of pancreatic cancer. Not pretty.

What's the value of throwing this in for no apparent reason?
About the same amount of value you musta' gotten for bringing up my finacial situation that was posted in the TBDB classifieds for the sale of my bass, in this thread. As you mentioned, I shared that publicly in there, but for one simple reason......friends in that thread were concerned about it out of respect for me and my bass, so I felt compelled to share it there, since they cared enough to ask.....not here.
Again, the folks at that mental hospital I suggested for you, are awaiting your arrival with baited breath.

Mr. Warburton, my name's R.M. Brown.

"Auriaprottu" is a handle that's bas(s)ed on an Aria Pro II EB that was my main bass (along with an Azola Baby) for 3 years while the neck on my cheap "carved" Vienna Strings upright I bought in 1996 (my second DB; the first went down in a car wreck in which I was not at fault but could not get my insurance comany to reimburse me properly) gave up the ghost in 2007 and sat in need of more expensive repair than the bass itself was worth. My facebook page is full of images of me playing various EBs over the last two years because of that.

I found someone last year who did the necessary repair work on my db for much less because I give him a lot of repair/mod business on the EB side (my bass hobby includes modding inexpensive EBs for fun), and so as of late 2010 I'm playing db again.

I'd hate to think that I need to have vids on Youtube (I don't) to suggest that people in general (not just Eric) ought not make statements that leave the listener fending for himself. But if that's what it is, I'll try to post some in the next few months. I don't expect you to find my playing impressive -it isn't, in the big picture- but I DO play and I do work.

Would you like, sir, to discuss EB headstocks at greater length now that you know my name?

Mr PC, you seem rather out of line to me with your more aggressive posts.

Paul, I understand you have been sorely provoked, however someone very close to me has spent the last couple of weeks in a Mental Health Unit on suicide watch.(A musician, denied access to a guitar which is their primary form of catharsis, at a time of great stress, because they may use the strings to top themselves). I might not be the only one reading for whom your chosen riposte is a painful turn of phrase.

It seems like a discussion on how to be respectful is devolving into mudslinging. Sad.

that info was in the thread that Chuck ******.......i mean, researched. you know, scrolled through all my past posts to seek info about me....again considering the amount of guests (non TB registered users) viewing the threads here at any given time, I don't understand how in the world you think you can control who remembers your written word, and where else it is discussed. Double edge sword.....you want the large audience, notoriety and respect (i think you deserve it), but you want to control where and how that info is shared in the world. All at the same time making excuses and boasting of being an abrasive personality whenever you don't like or agree with someone, anyone, you personally feel hasn't earned respect.

Intellectually dishonest?
