There are a couple guys here that are lifeguards, I've been one myself at one time.

You're wrong. Period.

It is NOT our job to babysit someone's kid for them, it is our job to sit in that "throne" and observe for anyone in OBVIOUS distress, then go to their aid.

But it is they're job to be observant and be aware of their surroundings.

I wasn't there and neither were you but I will say that the water park will be paying out some $'s

Fair enough and I definently agree, people need to start taking responsibility for their actions.

Just about every time you read about something like this, you can bet a paycheck that it involves someone who lives in public housing or on welfare.

Don't know for sure because they didn't say here, but I'd bet it. Yay for the Great Society.

I believe there are multiple faults here, 6 life guards actively scanning the pool at all times should have noticed a lifeless body floating before the little girl.

It's just like cops. They can be on the lookout, and attempt to foil as much crime as possible, but there is always going to be some slipping past the radar. Is it because they don't do their jobs? No, it's because they aren't Superman.

I'm for personal responsibility, and that goes for having kids as well, so of course I wouldn't be in favor of having to be 'approved' to have kids.

On the other hand, people aren't expected to work for a living, to pay for their own food, to provide for their own retirement, to get their own heath care, etc... so why should we expect these products of society to have to watch their own kids as well?

We obviously need a bureaucracy that follows everyone around and keeps their kids out of trouble and alive, so that they can grow up and depend on the bureaucracy as well.

Wouldnt you still agree that its odd that with 6 lifeguards around the pool the kid drowns n dies? I would.

No, it was 6 lifeguards for 1 pool, not the whole waterpark. Company regulations, so they say.

Actually I think the pool was about the size of half a football feild. That's not small.

Great America officials insisted six lifeguards had been on duty at the wave pool.

Maybe parents should also take responsibility over their children's reading comprehension skills, instead of leaving it all to teachers.

I know I do. I take responsibility for everything she's involved in.

Look, I don't think we'll ever know why the child wasn't seen by the 6 lifeguards. Maybe they bear some responsibility, maybe not. But, IMHO, the mother is primarily at fault. I won't let my 4 year old BATHE without an adult in the bathroom, let alone allow her to wander around a pool.

Jaquo: yeah, she'll get paid. God knows she doesn't deserve any of it.

The woman lost her child. So what if shes an idiot? Its obvious to me the lifeguards were also NOT doing their job. Whatever monetary compensation she gets is not nearly enough to compensate the loss of a child, partly due to the lifeguards, however so little they may be at fault.

More or less, but it wouls be hard for all six of them to be able to survey all parts of the pool at a time.

With the descriptions of how crowded the place was, and knowing how kids like to float face down pretending they are drowning, and everything else, no, I don't think it's odd that something like this happened.

Lifeguards help, but they aren't a substitute for parental supervision. That's like saying that since you have front and side airbags, a seatbelt, and other safety features, that you should be able to drive your car into a bridge abuttment without injury.
