Return or try to get fixed? G&L mj4

Agree with the "return it" consensus.

G&L won't transfer their warranty. A new neck from them will set you back $500-$700 and the wait time could be months. Memo's a cool guy if/when you can get ahold of him, so you can try and reach out, but I'd doubt GC will give you any satisfactory reimbursement for the neck cost.

I wouldn't say I got a deal , I paid the normal price for a G&L , that being said I feel it should be playable and no neck issue for that price.

Agreed to find another mj, Greenburst would likely be impossible
Guitar center manager in natick where it was bought only wanted to refund 200$ after G&L quoted 500$ and 4 months wait.
I will be returning this to gc tonight and getting my $ back hopefully without any issues.
I was thinking of swapping the l2000s neck I have into it if it worked.. but I don't want to kill a nice l2000 with a bunk mj4 neck

Just return it. Not worth the energy. Wash your hands of it, get your refund and move on.

I dealt with a truss repair once. It can be done and can even turn out better than the original, but you would need to find someone with experience and ideally some references, since it is an important surgery.

I would not do this on a bass that can still be returned.

Why is this even a question? Of course you should return it.

Why would G&L give you a $600-$700 neck, just because you bought a junk bass on the used market, and didn't hold the seller accountable?

Why on Earth would you not blame the GC employee who took it in? A straight neck and an intact/functioning truss rod are THE MOST important elements of a properly working guitar. It's not a "deeper thing" to check out. It's THE FIRST thing! That's like working at a car dealer, and taking a car without wheels in on trade. If you do that, you're straight-up incompetent and dumb as a post, end of story.

GC sold you a dud, return it and get a refund. They should be properly inspecting consignments/trade-ins before listing them for sale.

It's not a rare heirloom bass….return it and move on. There's a TON of great G&Ls out there!

If this were me, it'd already be on a UPS truck or brought directly to my local Guitar Center. Broken truss rod is absurd and it should have never been sold without full transparency.

G&L's repair department is to be avoided at any cost, in my opinion.

Ya you're doing right to return it. I own 4 G&L basses and while I love the styles tones and colors, 2 of them bought new had to have the necks replaced under warranty. One had a stripped truss rod brand new, the other bass my L2K first neck warped, 2nd neck the truss rod nut snapped off while attemting to adjust it the first time ever. Never had that happen before, so it's now back at G&L for it's 3rd neck. 4 months now and waiting.
I like G&Ls but the necks are questionable at best!

scary! I have an mj5 i adore and would hate for this to happen to it as well. I think the same thing happened nut snapped off rod and previous owner took his losses at gc on it .
Every neck I've felt from them had all very different shapes and sizes.

I returned it at the store and didn't realize this I drove away and read the receipt but they even got me on 25$ Shipping still! For returning their defective gear… taking it up to corporate tomorrow , was told by my gear rep that I bought it with over the phone I would be fully refunded.

You're doing the right thing by returning obviously, despite that you'll probably never see another Greenburst MJ-4 if you live to be a hundred.

GC offered to refund you $200? If they offered to sell you the bass for $200, it'd still be a questionable buy IMO. Like others have said, you don't want to deal with G&L on replacement necks. Ironically (or not) they replaced a custom neck on an MJ-4 for me a couple years ago, under warranty. They did a great job and believe it or not turnaround time was an astonishing 2 weeks (say wut?!).

However, it took me two months of wrangling with them about the warranty claim because I couldn't find my original reciept from the dealer, which they demanded to see. Because of that (and despite that I filled out and returned the warranty card), Memo made me pay shipping to Cali...$119. I later found the misplaced reciept. I will never forget that annoying episode, and will never buy another new USA G&L again.

It sounds like even though I was quoted 3-4 months it'll take 6 or more still for a new neck that'll possibly still have the same issue.. hmm
