Returning my bass

I am going to return my srx 590 I just recently purchased. The reason why I got this bass was because it felt very similar to my old bass and had a good slap tone. But for some reason it makes every single amp sound like its distorted and when I bought it I was playing at a low volume. So far I played it through A mesa boggie half stck, a gk backline 210 combo amp, a peavey tnt 115 and a roland db 500 all the same when u play it at around half volume it sounds distorted, then when I plug my other bass into it it sounds fine, I gotta take this back today being that its 30 days tom.

I look pretty closely at string-spacing, number of strings, workmanship in the fretwork, type of wood in the body, and pickups.

I believe you've got humbuckers in what you're returning, but are considering going with Fender (P or J pickup(s)).

It depends on what your choices are: cost and brands. Personally, I like Fenders, but watch for:
  • Huge neck-pockets, where the body meets the neck.
  • Bad necks/fretwork.
Hard to go wrong with a good Fender, but it can be hard to find a good Fender...

Not so many stores carry them, but the G&L Tribute L2000 or L2500 is a *great* value, at about $600. G&L was Leo Fender's "last" company before he died. The Tributes have "big honkin'" humbuckers like your SRX, though - you may find that they "distort".

Personally, I like the "thinner" sounding Fender pickups (single-coil Jazz to be precise).

Were you plugging into the active input on these amps? The preamp may be too strong - try the active input or pad switch.

Just another possibility of why it sounds bad and you should investigate before sending back.

Also, check the battery
Also, adjust the pickups, they may be too close.

I seem to remember another thread where someone had a similar problem.
I think that they may or may not have fixed the problem by replacing the battery.
Either way, a new battery is always nice to have especially if you are planning on returning your bass.
You can always say, "Well I put a new battery in it so you guys know you are getting a great deal."

I have a very similar bass, the SRX505 and it doesn't have this problem. I know this is going out on a limb, but have you tried a new battery or perhaps even checking the pickup height?

:D

edit: also, I hardly ever get much above the middle detents on the bass and treble controls, it has an insane amount of boost. If you are diming these like a passive bass, try rolling them back to somewhere in the middle.
