Revamping a Squier Precision Bass

Nice to see some collaboration going on here! This is what TB is about IMHO. For my project I decided to splurge on good electronics though the rest is pretty mid-scale. Looking forward to a few little boxes arriving the next two days and will post more pics as work gets done.

I agree with bassgod, let's see some pictures. If you don't want to fool with making your own thread, just post it all here. Heck, we might as well make it a Squier (or anything else, really) revamp mega-thread.

I am down for that, i got a fender mark hoppus cheap due to a stripped and cracked body I will post pics as i bring it back from the grave, just trying to sell another guitar so i can free up some space in my small work area.

I've always thought the Hoppus was an interesting instrument. I'm interested to see where you go with this one.

Pretty much how i look at it , i would leave it as is but the guy sanded to bare wood on some spots and to the wood sealer in others thats why it looks like it has white paint spots on it, i actually posted it for sale on craigs i want to refinish it but there would be alot of work put into that there are dents needing filling 2 cracks in the neck pocket one that goes on the back of the body and you can feel the skunk stripe in the back of the neck i think the bass has some water damage.

So i am going to see if i can get my money back out of it and move on to my 70's style relic squier P bass, the hoppus bass was kinda a spur of the moment buy and i would rather do the squier

Most of the items arrived for my P-Bass project, so I can start to get down to work over the weekend. :hyper:

Decided to go with a maple Jazz neck, so I guess this is more of a P-Jazz bass. The Bartolini system looks really good. much of this will be bolt-on work, but I'll need to rout out a cavity in the back for the 18v battery box, run the wiring, make sure the electronics fit, and shield the cavity. Also want to clean up the neck pocket some. I set the pearl white pickguard in place just to see how it would look, and I think I made a good choice. Last item to arrive is a custom decal for the headstock but I have a lot to do before i need it. Any suggestions on finishing the neck and headstock? I like some of the amber finishes I've seen here...

I tinted my neck with Reranch. The stuff works great, and you can control the degree of amber you want.

You're making a Jazz bass special! My Joan Rivers bass project was pretty much the same thing!

Stew Mac has a great routing template for the double battery box. I'd highly reccommend it.

There's a couple of guys on Ebay who do custom headstock decals. One of them is from NY and the other is from Colorado. The one who is from Colorado is terrible about getting decals shipped. It took me a month and a half to get it settled with him. Just a heads up.

Finishing question: I believe my replacement neck is finished with satin polyurethane. I would love to be able to apply my decal and go over the neck with a tinted coat and a clear coat. Is this doable, or am I going to have to strip the neck to bare wood and do the full filler/tint/clearcoat route?

From what my father has told me, anything can be sprayed over laquer, which is what the tint is. However, spraying the tint over the poly finish may cause the tint to bubble up. You'll will have to locate a poly tint to do it.
