Reverend Mike Watt sig...

I wish Gibson would have made him a sig bass with active electronics and a relic look with the stickers ...kinda like this.....similar to the fender SRV guitar

Man, this excites me a ton! I got lucky enough to interview Watt in '91 for the Flyin' the Flannel tour and he told me that Fender was Trying to convince him to put his name on a signature bass... a 5 stringer. Needless to say, Watt wasn't too keen about having his name on a mass produced bass driven by sales, but he kicker was the 5th string. He said he'd never even held one and figured the low B would be more prone to making fart noises than punk rock. Until just recently, I completely agreed with him . Reverend makes a damn good bass. I hope they play it cool and convince him to pull the trigger. I'd buy two; one to play fIREHOSE songs on and another one to stow away. The Anchor inlay is an awesome tribute. I hope he takes the plunge. No shame in it. He's more than earned his stripes.

Plus, Watt is the reason I ditched guitar and picked up a bass in the first place. He sat with me at the Crocodile Cafe in Seattle before a gig and showed me how to play some of his fills from Relatin' Dudes to Jazz. It meant the world to me as a fan that my bass hero would take the time out to show some stupid kid how to play like a badass. No ones music has touched me more than his. It think this would be an excellent way to honor the godfather of punk and a true pioneer of the bass.

For those wanting something more like his gibsons, it wouldn't be much work to pull the MM pup and pop a mudbucker in there. Might require cutting a small pickup surround, but it wouldn't be hard to do.

I'd be curious what they'd charge for such a simple instrument.

For fans of Watt and all others assembled:
TB-er Jio recently had an opportunity to build a prop copy (non-functional) of Watt's stolen Gibson for Watt to sign at an event.
Came out pretty cool.

Mike Watt EB bass replica (prop)

This is from last Saturday night - same bass (same rig) and to my ears it sounded like Watt.

I dig it. Wish it had the pups that were in Watt's stolen bass (or atleast similar) but judging from recent gigs Mike seems to have moved away from those

Watt is a gear geek from the word go and repeatedly points out that those pu's (Lane Poor & that specific Bart) are no longer made. I don't know but is the Reverend made of mahogany? He prefers the warmth of that tone-wood which is one of the reasons he gravitated to Gibsons.
