Rat Wax! Wipes on, gets absorbed by the finish and dries matte. Hopeful that it will keep the finish that way.

Found ths AllParts guard in a parts drawer, no idea where it came from. I'm thinking of blacking out the three ply and matting the pearl.

First of all for making that trashed relic pristine again - and for using such a stunning color.

Also for using Rat Wax. It is without question - the best product ever for matte paint. I use it on my hot rod and my matching hot rod bass - I have found that it's the only thing that really works!

Loooong time on this one but worth the wait. Pure Vintage '64 pickup, it sounds like my USA '64 AVRI. It's a little lighter due to body drilling and tuners.

Just saw this thread - way under the radar! Real cool look for that P - very unique and classy Carlo! I did a similar major routing under a J pg to lighten it and it does give it a somewhat acoustic tinged tone as well.

Thanks, JIO. I started this thread in 2016, then put the project aside . Buying this '63 AVRI in December and really liking the 'Pure Vintage' pickup was the impetus to complete the project.

The only acoustic difference I can hear between the two is when I tap the pickguard of the Squier, definitely a hollow sound. Otherwise both basses sound the same to me plugged in. I prefer the wider '63 neck but the Squier has a good one and 21 frets are nice.

Those '63 AVRI's are nice. I have the Fender Pure Vintage '74 pu's in my '66 bodied J - that line was (as far as I know they aren't available anymore other than NOS) really good. They are in the Flee trib J also. Fender has done this before - the Super 55 split-coil J pu's were also really good and they stopped making them.

I made a short-scale bass that has a big 'swimming-pool" rout under the pg and I can hear a bit of a resonance that hollow-body basses have. Not a huge influence, but there.
