Yeah, the base would be a flat line and the point would be a cutout in the top/front veneer of the body. So let's say the top/front of the bass was a layer of walnut, and the body wood beneath it was ash. The point at the base of the neck would show the ash while the rest of the top/front of the base was the walnut.
Sorry if it sounds confusing. Normally, I'd throw together a picture in MS Paint, but I just upgraded to Windows 7 and I'm finding that Paint is far less functional now.
