Rex Browns white euro4lx

Hey dudes of the TB forums, I hope this is the right area for this topic, if not, mods feel free to move it, and if this has been discussed before my apologies.

So I was surprised to see a while back that Rex Brown(former Pantera, Down, and current Kill Devil Hill bassist) plays euro4lx basses, vs say the american counterpart.

But upon reading a few articles he apparently has one that is different from your average 4lx. Supposedly it is supposed to have a mahogany neck and alder wings and says this bass "takes the cake" compared to all other spectors he has, which is quite the collection I hear.

So in your opinion, how do you think this would sound compared to your standard euro, and do you think there are any other reasons they sent him such a different one, would love to hear your opinions and insight guys.

See from what I have read he says that the electronics are stock, but in a few different interviews he has said that those are the woods used....which means only a few things.

1. its a fabricated lie, just for the sake of saying mine is different.

2. He does not know what woods are actually used.

3. Or his really is different.

Rex had said in a recent interview that he jams the EMG pickups as far as possible into the bass to get more of the body wood involved in the tone. Not sure how true that is.....email Spector customer service and ask PJ Rubal what the deal is.

Keep in mind that the American version versus the European version are not HUGELY different. The American version has a slimmer neck, but both series of basses are made from the same 3 piece necks. (American series) Maple body woods do not offer as much midrange as the Alder-based Euro's. I owned the American 5LX with Water Cured Redwood top - it was a nice bass, but I preferred the larger neck of the Euro's. PJ Rubal can fill you on more details

From what I've heard from both PJ and Patrick its entirely stock; the Czech shop can do special orders, but it does have limits as its not truly a custom shop.

I've never even heard of an NS-2 having a mahogany neck or alder wings.

A lot of the bass tone is in the player after all ;)

I’m still using that white Spector that I have. I’ve probably got 40 [Spectors], but this one just takes the cake. I don’t know what it is. It’s mahogany with alder wings on it. It’s got that mid punch but then again it’s got that low end that’ll make the hairs on your knees curl. I sink the pickups really hard in those mahogany neck, and you just get this real huge bite. I don’t even use the treble pickup. It’s a P/J configuration and I just use the top pickup. It just depends on how hard you pick, and I pick really [expletive] hard on some of this stuff, so that’s where I get a lot of my growl. It’s not more of a gain thing, it’s more of what you’re getting out of the instrument. I try to keep it as clean as I can but at the same time I’ve got to have a little distortion, then I can get all the distortion I want out of my right hand.

What are your main basses these days?

I've probably got about 40 Spectors. They sent me this white one I’ve been playing lately. It has a mahogany neck all the way through, but it has alder wings. It's got a wild mid-punch to it. It really helps me cut through the guitars nicely, and it gets this huge low end. It's amazing.

I think I remember Patrick saying Rex didn't realize he actually had a maple neck and that the bass he has is in fact a standard Euro. Some basses have an extra bit of mojo and apparently Rex's white one is the king of 40 others. Man, I'd like to play around with that collection for a few weeks!

It's a bone stock Euro, much research showed that the euro and USA series of basses did not offer Alder as a wood, and gathering from the data the TB'ers above me stated, it's stock. I really wish he'd use both pickups again, i'm not a huge fan of his tone in KDH, it reminds me of Geezer's Tone of 13. Not saying it's bad at all, but maybe i'm just biased as a Pantera/Down fan.

Did he use 40DC's in his spectors when he recorded Rebel Meets Rebel?
