Ric 4001/4003 or 4004

Not sure if this is the proper place to post this, but would anyone know where one may try out a Ric bass ? I am north of Toronto, Canada and have had zero luck trying to find one.
Seen 1-2 come up for resale but they move pretty quickly.
Thanks in advance ;)

Well, if you ever find yourself in SW Michigan, you're welcome to play mine. Hopefully some one closer will be willing to let you have a go.......

Go to the Ric site, and look for local dealers. I'll tell you this, I've been a 4001/4003 player since the late 70's. Got my first 4004Cii early this year, (after a 26 month wait), and I'm a changed man. The 4004's are where it's at, as far as Ric's are concerned.

I'm a Toronto boy myself and if you want to play a new one your out of luck, Long and McQuade at Bloor and Ossington has the occasional Rick come through but they usually already have someone's name on it. If you are willing to go second hand Capsule Music on Queen st. W usually has one or two 70's 4001's. the best way is to e-mail long and McQuade and see if they have one in stock that they could hold for you whether you are buying it or not.

Beleive me i have coveted one for a while and i can tell you they are rare in the GTA.

I keep checking but to no avail. The only 2, I have seen come up around here were both 4003's and went within days of being advertised.
Funny you mention the 4004's I have seen a few at a reasonable price (in my mind) but panic when I think of dropping that amount of $ on an unplayed instrument. I do like the look of them and what I have read look to be a great instrument. I have read a few of your posts in the past and appreciate your response.

Ok, so I'm not the only one. I have called them a few times (not recently) no luck. As posted I have seen some 4004's in the US for sale but just can't buy before trying specially for that type of coin. Thanks for your input.

I live in Buffalo, NY just south of Toronto...this past weekend I was in a small mom and pop shop on Main Street called "Music City". They are an authorized Ric dealer and I saw a 4003 hanging from the wall, so it might be worth a trip if you cant find anything closer and you seriously wanna try one out.

goodluck.

Rics are a little difficult to try before you buy, especially if you're interested in a new one. There are only a few Ric dealers out there (none for example where I live in DFW), and with a 2 year backlog, most new Rics are already spoken for before the arrive. If any unalloacted ones do show up, most are snapped up pretty quickly. I ended up buying my 4001 C64S without having played it. It's a great instrument - I was not disappointed.

I bought one without ever playing one. I bought it used, in mint condition. I figured if I hated it, I wouldn't lose any, or very little, selling it to someone else. I knew I'd really have to hate the feel of it because I loved the sound of them when I heard them on recordings. Luckily for me, basses may feel different, but I haven't found too many that were uncomfortable or that I hated playing. I guess I can adjust pretty easily.

Places like on-line retailer Musician's Friend have very liberal return policies (at least a week or more) if you don't like the instrument. And they do ship to Canada. Think they do have some 4001s reissues & 4003s available immediately depending on the color.

Check the site carefully, some appear to be on Clearance: http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend...1C64-C-Series-Electric-Bass-Guitar?sku=513665

Or available as Used. But. those are not returnable I believe.

I think the 4004 is a fantastic bass (I've played two, wanting to become an owner of one) and can be had for around $1700 at many dealers right now. The 4003 goes for about the same, but the price varies more, from $1600-1900 most places. I know of one place that offers them $1650 before discount.

The 4001C series is a Paul McCartney tribute and is quite a bit more expensive, and now they're discontinued so the value is skyrocketing quite quickly, even in the poor economy.
