Yeah, mine's a '92 midnight blue with black trim. Sometimes I feel a little bad because my possibly-now-a-collector's-item has been modded a little: I installed Bartolini pickups and have a different wiring layout, but it's all reversible and can return it to stock if necessary.

I am looking at one right now in that color. It is not a collector's item just a discontinued color. When they were new, people were into the colors and now since they are no longer made in those schemes, it comes down to personal preference. I like them because they are not the standard colors that you always see, you know--fireglo, jetglo, maplglo....obviously, there are other colors but these are the top 3. I have had barts in one and alembics in another. definitely change the sound but again, that is personal preference. I like them stock because I want that old school growl...

Now I'm confused. Mine has what I think is the black trim package, but the serial# puts it's manufacture date in '81. I've seen the Ruby Reds. They are prettys sweet. I've always had a thing for my silver though. It especially looks cool from the back.

I play my '61 4000, it goes with me on all my gigs, along with my '67 Jazz bass. These two basses do it for me on any gig.

I get a lot of attention because my bass is rare plus the tone is brillant sounding, much like the clarity of the bass notes on a piano.

That is a really sweet bass. I have only seen a couple of those and they are not cheap. What kind of gigs do you use that on? Do you have a soundclip? I would love to hear that thing roar!! :eek:

i got a 1983 4001 jetglo and i took off the capacitor on the bridge pickup; now it has the sound i want (through a marshall dbs 7400) and i would play with that on every gig; unfortunately one of the bands i play in has a B E A D tuning, and i don't want to de tune the rick because of the dual truss rod. So i set the gibson thunderbird for that even if i prefer the rick sound ...
P.S. as you can imagine for me the bass has to have 4 strings...

Walbassman, I use my rick on everything from jazz to funk, pop and even some country. Doesn't mateer to me, the tone is there and that's all I need for any gig.

From my understanding there were 600 in total made.. I see them going for about 6000.00 on guitarbrokers.com. Craig has one, (not quite as nice of condition as mine) for sale, he's asking 6000.00 and it's missing the sliding mute system.

Send me your email and I can send you a couple MP3's of tunes I used this bass on in the studio. They are covers so I can't upload them to my soundclick.com account.

FWIW, I have owned several 4001's, 4003's with the ricko sound and nothing compares in tone to the 4000 model...IMHO.
