Rick 4001 vs Peavey T40

Back in the 80s, I had and played an Ovation Magnum that could absolutely NAIL the Ric sound.....but I still have a Ric and the Ovation has been history for 20 years......go figure...

The main difference for me that Rickenbacker sound is more elegant and and plays better.

Peavey in the other hand, is more powerful and LOUD!

I love my T, but I got to say that Ric is looking good. If I ever have the ca$h, I'll be slinging a Ric one of these days. Until then, nothing surpasses my T.

I've never heard a T-40, now I see why people love them so much! The Ric has a bit more twang to my ears, probably due to the single coil pick ups, but they both a nice agressive sound.

you are right, i hear the rick more "twang" but it is closer to the original record.

Those big Peavey pickups are actually single coils when the tone knob is full open (only one half of the pickup is active). They switch to humbucker mode when the tone knob is rolled off 25% or so. The T-40 is a very unique passive bass.

If you just want the similar tone, T-40 is good to go for almost 1/10 the price.
But if you want the RIC, get the rick

it loses power. i swear, since i got this t40 i've never played it in single coil mode.

either using its strange "phase" feature.

the rick obviously provides a fuller tone, but i really don't disagree the T one.

in fact, due to my Rickenbacker being from 1979, i am seriously thinking in using it only for important gigs, i dont like to be around with a bass that valuable.

Nice! The T 40 does a good job of nailing the Rick tone. I know, I had one...

However, listen to the Rick tone vs the T 40. I hear a noticeable difference. The Rick has more zing, more growl and a fuller sound.

I will have a Rick one day...and maybe another T 40!

The T-40 is fine (I've had one for 27 years).

I liked the Ric more, it sounded slightly less muddy and had more growl to it. Doesn't mean the T-40 isn't a great sounding bass though!
