Yep, that's the instrument on which he started, I believe. He mentions it in passing on occasion.
Ayup. I took lessons with him for a year back when I was a student at Ithaca College. He went through the bass program there.
People who only found Rick recently tend to think he's just a guy who complains about the Spotify top 20

I only knew he was a guitar player, producer, and interviewer of great musicians. I knew he could play some bass but I certainly had no idea the he really played bass.
Yes and said he wants to join an ensemble and is in the market for another upright bass.

Long interview. But slimming I did not see him playing the upright. and this is the first time I am hearing that was his or use to be his main instrument. Hope he played regularly because upright is merciless when it comes to practice or time on the instrument-- even a month of not playing is noticeable, I only chatted with Milt Hinton once and his advice to me was you need to always play the DB because you will lose the touch pretty fast. Of course I am not Rick Beato.
Yes he's a real legit bassist.

I've had to limit my listening to Rick's videos to him interviewing people I care about. I reckon he's just makin' a livin', but his incessant complaining is just boring. I don't even disagree most of the time, but hells bells, he gripes more than I do. Dude, just change the station.
Maybe he'll put up some cool DB content.

He also probably plays the Oboe. I am, waiting for the reveal. Piano proficiency was required when I got my music degree. I'm sure it was the same for him.

I saw the video where he is analyzing Jaco and he plays some of Donna Lee. It was obvious that he could have totally nailed if he had wanted to.
For players of a certain era, us older folk, being stuck playing bass at some point was a rite of passage. It would surprise just how many of the older generation did a turn on bass before becoming more famous as a guitar playing front person. And there are likely many like myself that went from being a singing lead guitar player, frustrated in many ways, to a more contented bass player.
Yes, it's the universal instrument. All my classes were taught on piano. Intervals, chord structure, voice leading, it's all easily demonstrated on piano.
Yep. Ithaca College required a number of "piano tech" classes, as well as sight-singing classes that also involved piano playing.
