I never would've thought in a million years. The tuners are definitely not right, unless they used different ones for this one model.

because not everyone has your exact bass playing needs. some people like playing an 8 string. i have no idea whether the 4008 listed in the ad is real.

Obviously not everyone has the same needs, but Ric is already sort of a niche instrument. I would imagine it would be exorbitantly expensive brand new.

I just thought it was odd. I had never seen one before and was curious if anyone knew about it.

The Rickenbacker Bass Book by Paul Boyer devotes a few pages to it.

The 4008 models are rare, but very cool. I don't have a need for one myself, but I'd love to try one out.

It's certainly very cool. It just blew me away; as someone who has obsessively looked at new and used Rics for years I haven't once come across one of these. That headstock is a monster!

No problem! I had been looking at the 4003/S8 models for some time, otherwise I too would have thought the eBay auction was a gimmick.

Its worth mentioning fellow TB'er @PaulBoyer wrote a book about RIC basses that is way cool, very informative and contains tons of awesome photos.

I've seen that book mentioned around here several times. I really should see about getting a copy before I finally pull the trigger on one (which will be the greatest day of my Bass Life).

I'm either getting a 4003 or a 4003s.

The one on the link I posted here is currently being bid at just over a G. I followed that sale just to see how much it ultimately goes for. It's gotta be worth a pretty penny.

If this were mine,i'd do black pickguard screws and vintage black control knobs too,to make it even more black.....

Those are absolutely gorgeous. What's with the different tuners though? Too big for 8 of them on a headstock? That was a huge red flag when I saw that ad on eBay. Those are definitely not like the regular ones.

I' ve read they went with this arrangement of the smaller Schaller tuners so the string sequence could be reversed according to the player's preference.
(Although i don't know if anyone prefers the reverse of how these 2 are strung.)

Well that makes perfect sense. Yet another reason I don't design basses!
