Rickenbacher - Good or Bad?

Rickenbacker is a love hate brand. People either seem to love them or hate them. And those that love them can't seem to take any criticism of Rickenbackers. And those who hate them can't seem to tolerate and good things said about Rickenbackers.

As for me I like rickenbackers a lot but I also realize they are quirky basses with a few flaws in the design. The same could be said for Fenders too.

I don't really think a person's specific claim with photos is arguable. I mean, the people arging aren't even holding the bass in question, so how could they know? Short answer? They don't. Now, if they wanted to post their own bass as some kind of "but look at how good this is", I guess I could see the point. I just don't see the arguing with a guy who's not satisfied with a product. Let him vent. Think he's stupid? Ignore is an easy function to use and it prevents people from reading opinions they know they are going to disagree with in the first place.

I got a used, '99 Rick 4003 back in 2004 for a little over 1k and didn't like it: the glossy neck was a little sticky; I didn't like the glossy/finished fretboard; the bass didn't feel as robust as my Fender P; the edges dug into my forearm; and it just sounded a little too hollow/nasally for me. Furthermore, the 4003 was kind of a theft magnet--everyone wanted to have a look or go at it. Although I'd love to try one again, I don't think the overall tone and feel fit me. Basses are all in the ear of the beholder, anyway. I went back to my MIA Fender P/J and haven't really looked back.

I echo what Rickenboogie said above: I own 5 Rickenbackers and they are all excellent instruments. I've never had any quality issues with any of my basses: I can set my watch by them. There's no one bass that's right for every given musical situation (no, not even a J-bass). Still, I would unhesitatingly recommend a Ric if you're thinking of purchasing one.

Right now my Ric is my #2 bass(Jewstar One, my custom bass is #1)...and I have the ULTIMATE RIC. As far as a stock bass, Ric is also my #2, a Jazz Bass being my #1 (all I need is a nice maple/rosewood neck and I'll have the ULTIMATE JAZZ BASS).

What I don't like about Rickenbacker is summed up with some of my experiences posting on the Rick Resource forum. I got bashed for putting a homemade TRC on one of my Rics (like I was going to pay $100+ for a piece of plastic) and making fun of RICs TRC policy. I really think RIC is a bit elitist, and while they make good basses, quite frankly it's the screwiness of supply and demand that makes them so expensive, and the fact that you have people who collect Rics that quite frankly are unimpressive as players but end up costing more than most boutique basses because they are limited production. A great example is the $3500 Vintage Re-issue 4001. My Ric destroys that bass in every way, yet no one is going to pay $3500 for my Ric.

Great basses,pair it up with a thunderbird and your good to go,they were made for each other.Get a pro4 epi and you,ve got active covered as well and can slap yourself silly.
Jetglo Rick and a black pro4 and you,ve got a matchin outfit-marvelous
