That is an early one ... but not the prototype ... the prototype is actually a 4003s8 with 5 holes in the headstock ... I saw a pic of that bass a few years ago

Rickenbacker actually made a 5 string bass

It's in the book. This one is probably another prototype as it doesn't have the production-models' unbound body and neck and the maple fingerboard. RIC dabbles with features as they design a new model and sometimes make several versions before they decide on what to keep.
