Rickenbacker 'getting outed'

Folks are entitled to their opinions. You are entitled to disagree with them. If those folks have YouTube channels, then you also are entitled not to watch them.

I enjoy watching Dave's videos even though he hates two of my four basses (the Ric 4001 and the MIM Geddy Lee). I've learned a lot about guitar maintenance from his videos

I also can't stop myself from mispronouncing "Ernie Ball" because of Dave.

I like Dave, he's a good tech and very entertaining. He can be cynical at times and especially towards Rics. He's had bad experiences with the earlier 4001 models so I take it with a grain of salt.

I'm with you on that. I've been subscribed to Dave's Fun World of Stuff for ages on YouTube. He's a bass player in real life and if he's a crusty old fart bass player, I'm right there with him and so are a lot of other TB members! Plus he's Canadian! I don't really learn much on his videos, I just find them entertaining. We've all had good and bad experiences with stuff and enjoy letting it all out after a couple of pops. I find Dave's patter amusing.

I recently bought my first 4003 and had always wanted one, not my main bass, but really glad I got one. but I still enjoy listening to this guy.

As for the string warranty comment. It seems legit.... from the Ric website

"The warranty is void if, upon inspection by RIC factory personnel, the defect is determined to be the result of damage due to misuse, exposure to environmental extremes, modification, or the use of replacement parts, including strings, not in conformity with factory specifications, or due to damage not resulting from a manufacturing defect.

This warranty does not extend to strings or deterioration of items subject to routine wear and tear, nor shall it apply where the serial number has been removed or defaced."

The bridge... agreed, not the smartest design... of course I just did set intonation on a Peavey Cirrus... an equally dumb design.

Never got the love for this guy, I see him as A hack and A boring one at that.

I think Dave's hackiness is part of the fun. Whenever he goes to get a job-appropriate tool he always acts annoyed at the inconvenience, like he'd prefer fix everything with one crescent wrench.
Sometimes it seems he might not be able to find the appropriate tool, or in doubt that he even owns it.
Wouldn't leave my gear with him, that's for sure. But I'd hold the crescent wrench.

I've been playing Rics since 1974. I had guitar techs that knew how to work on them on the very rare occasion they needed work. Frankly I didn't know there was a problem with them until I joined TB. Silly me, I just played the hell out of them all those years and didn't know it couldn't be done. I guess I'll have to stop playing my stock 1981 Rickenbacker since now I know it's not possible.
Dave is sort of like the 'Don Rickles' of bass dudes. You just CANNOT take him serious. I am completely entertained by his shtick and it has no effect at all on how I view other products. I like him. "Yep, it's gooched"

I love Dave's videos! He is opinionated and not afraid to share it (like most of us here). He does offer some useful set up tips but you sometimes have to wade through a whole lot of fodder. To be fair it's not only Ric's he rips on....StewMac is a favorite target also.
His opinions aren't the problem. I actually find myself feeling sorry for the owners of these guitars he "repairs."

I LOVE RIC! There. I said it.

Yes, the bridge is a pain in the ass. Yes, 2 truss rods are test of patience. Yes, the slab type front of the body binding will leave grooves in your arm. But a 4001 set up right is the best playing, best looking, best sounding bass ever. Just my opinion.

From bi-amped Ric-O-sound with roundwounds to tape wound/neck pup only with treble tone off, they sound great. The most variety of tone from 4 knobs ever.

In my younger days, it seemed like all the best bass players were playing Ric. I would go to concerts and the baddest of the bad were all playing the same thing. Paul Goddard, Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, StarCastle, etc. And THAT tone..........

I had to have one.

The other day, an older lady that is a client of mine game me 3 CD's of her band . They play bluegrass gospel. I dont like bluegrass gospel but I was curious. Her band plays live on the radio every Sunday morn at 7 am. One of the CD's was live. I listened to all of them and was amazed at how good they were but especially impressed with the bass trax.
I told her I thought they were very good at what they did but was very surprised with the quality of the bass tone.

"Is that an upright he's playing? It sounds great! Very tight. very smooth." She just looked at me and said, "He used to play upright, but now he plays a Rickenbacker bass."

I was stunned. Then we talked bass for an hour. She made my day.

On the left my 1976 , 4001. 1st year had to get it set and tweaked a few times. Only bass on the road, never went out of tune, only used roundwounds and frets are still good. bought the 2015 so I could keep wear and tear down on the 4001. now I have 7 basses and still enjoy the Rics. that video just has no bias against Rics , bwahahaha, sort of like CNN and other news outlets.
