Rickenbacker 'getting outed'

Hey, what happened to the post GBBS just made personally attacking me?

Nothing says "I'm not butthurt over your opinions" quite like a personal insult to my intelligence

I really wanted to nope out of this thread but it's getting too good!

I deleted it because you're too dense.

Imho Dave is an a$$cl@wn with attitude. He'd never be asked to work on any instrument I own. Think about it boys, do you not think his workmanship will be a reflection of that attitude? He may think he's got [mad?] skills as a luth-tech but he's lacking the biggest skill of all. It's called by various names and it's multi faceted so let's just call it customer relations, consisting of positive qualities including but not limited to respect, discretion, and positivity. If he takes such a dim view of Ric products what do you think he feels about the customers who chose those instruments and came to him for help? He's in the wrong business and his video is a waste of bandwidth. No, I don't own anything Ric and never have.

A. I doubt he's going to lose his shirt over you not taking your instruments personally to him, so you can take that stance if you want.

B. Is this video in any way indicative of his "customer service" though, OR his view on Ric customers? It's how he feels about this model of Rickenbacker bass. Hell, he dropped an entire Summer's worth of teenage sweat on one. He has more right to be upset about them than I do.

C. As someone else mentioned, it's likely his schtick. You know, sort of how John Cena doesn't body slap people in real life?

I totally agree with Point C. Dave does this sort of thing for fun in his spare time (I believe his profession is special effects for movies) and the videos no doubt are a sub-project of that hobby. He's copping an attitude in order to be more entertaining. If he stuck strictly to anodyne comments and never offended anybody, he wouldn't get nearly as many chuckles and "likes" as he does.

It's a whole lot of stream-of-consciousness. It's Dave's id speaking without a filter and frankly I find it really funny. But take his remarks with a grain of salt.

While I like the way a RIC sounds and plays. I have to agree with Dave that the necks are gooched. It's the Achilles heel of the 4001. I recently got an old 4001 for free because the neck had a nasty crack at the nut and the fretboard was lifting. I knew exactly why it cracked. Those stinking dual truss rods. In true RIC fashion the nuts and rod ends were bent down gouging the wood and the upper ends were digging into the spacer plate where they no longer held the neck in alignment. Someone cranked it too much trying to get the neck straight Those early RIC 4001's really do IMO have a very poor truss rod setup. They're not made to actually *adjust* the neck only to hold it position after you manually push or pull it where you want it to be. At least they eventually replaced it with better designed rods.

Oh and what Dave said about having RIC brand strings or no warranty is 100% correct. When I bought a RIC I ALWAYS bought a set of their strings to toss on in case I needed warranty repairs. LOL

My guess is that 95% of 4001 owners don't realize how to PROPERLY do a neck adjustment. One of these days I'll get it fixed proper and play it again. It is all original after all.

The crack was pretty open when I got the bass. I injected some glue in there and clamped it up. Hopefully it'll be OK when I put it back together. I can sand or steel wool it smooth and shoot some amber laquer on there.

This is the bass side rod after I got it a bit straightened but the threads are chewed up bad. Have to cut it back and re-thread it.

Lol ad infinitum.

I agree that the bridge design is not good but how often does intonation need to be adjusted? Initially a pain but once it's done, enjoy the unmistakable and unique Rickenbacker sound!!

Wow, if people like that kind of stuff, I've got about 1,000 topics I can start making grumpy old man videos about. I'm gonna be famous!
