Rickenbacker 'getting outed'

I'm sure there are techs out there who could point out the shortcomings of every piece of gear i own, but you know what? It still sounds great to me.

Not all of us have the funds to buy top-of-the-line custom hand-made boutique gear, but we still like to play, so we do our best with what we can afford. If you're gonna crap on us for that, you can seriously FOAD.

My bass, rig, and effects cost me less than $2000 total, and I still get compliments on my tone from other bassists after every show.

Huh?
I'm not even sure where this is coming from. Rickenbackers aren't budget instruments.
I'm with you on the money issue. I'd rather not pay a guy $100 to set up a Rickenbacker, and I'd also rather not deal with the problems that I've read about.
The 4004 was perfect in that respect (R.I.P.). The only leftover thing from the 4003 series was the dual truss rods, but I don't find that to be a problem.

I took my RIC to Dave a few years ago when I still had it. I could never get that RIC to play the same way two days in a row. Neck bent like spaghetti so in a last ditch effort to get it playable, I was referred to Dave by another tech in town.
He is the same in person and on video and I found him to be quite personable and funny. Alas, the RIC was gone within a few months.

I would need a good mic..

The only reason Ricks get the hater heat is bc they are so expensive. I'd buy one on the cheap. I don't really like them but they sound very specific. Like a real "beatle bass", I can't stand playing them but nothing sounds like them.
There's a good reason Ricks and BB's are still around, but they don't get a free pass on youtube humor. :D

I've been playing Rics since 1974. I had guitar techs that knew how to work on them on the very rare occasion they needed work. Frankly I didn't know there was a problem with them until I joined TB. Silly me, I just played the hell out of them all those years and didn't know it couldn't be done. I guess I'll have to stop playing my stock 1981 Rickenbacker since now I know it's not possible.

Did you miss your nap today?

Not sure how you so poorly managed to misconstrue what I said leading you to believe I said flat out "Rics can NOT be played."

My first "real" bass was a beater 4001. They're quirky beasts for sure.

They don't look, feel or sound like nearly anything else. So if you want that look, sound or feel, there ya go.

And they're the best bass for metal. And tort. And carrots.

Why play the bass when you can nitpick and whine about it online?

Is there a more polarizing major manufacturer?

I read over my post a few times, and I can't find the part where I made that claim...

I get sick of seeing gear snobs (like the guy who made this video) putting down others for using stuff that they like.

On the topic of Rickenbackers, I get sick of people saying things like "I can't believe someone would pay $1500 for THAT when they could have gotten THIS instead". Maybe they liked the way the Rick sounds and feels, and the "shortcomings" aren't issues for them.
