Rickenbacker Rant

This will probably work fine:

Probably, but maybe not. ;)

I've read on the Rick forum of some who bought the tool FROM Rickenbacker and it didn't fit.

So imagine if they did include it and it didn't fit. LOL.

This is all going to depend on the individual bass. Hell, in my earlier post in this thread I was highlighting that two instances of the same Xcelite tool were different enough so that one fit MY Rick and one did not. That's on the tool maker.

It is what it is. If this is a deal breaker for some, that's a personal choice ... I have enough experience with Gibson guitars to know how it is ... you work with a reputable outlet, in this case Wildwood or PoTR and work through the nuances of this instrument.

None of this is a deterrent for me ... I'm perfectly happy with my 4003 and plan on keeping it/playing it for years to come. I like the way it feels/sounds enough to engage in the necessary ...

To be fair, the issue seems to be not so much the tool being the correct tool but that there is insufficient space between the bottom of the truss rod nut and the wood of the headstock to insert the tool. This may not be the case with all Rics but it was with my 4003. I tried several sockets and the " correct" tool before finding one that was narrow enough to do the job but it was no big problem and certainly not a deal breaker. Like Greg above, I couldn't be more happy.....

I used a flat file to modify my tool. Took 10 minutes...

:roflmao: Damn, that must have hurt :roflmao:

I bought my 1st 4003 a couple months ago. The retailer set it up and it plays wonderfully. I can't get enough of the tone! My #1 now. The others are gathering dust. Should have bought one many, many years ago.

I called up the shop and Rickenbacker today. The shop I bought it from wants to diagnose the problem, I was talking to the guy on the phone and he said the best course of action if its the switch is to send me a new one and install it on the bass. I told him I had no experience soldering but he assured me I would be more than capable and wouldn't screw anything up... o_O

The other option is to pay them AGAIN to ship it all the way up there and have them fix the issue....AGAIN.

Rickenbacker says if it qualifies for warranty work I can pay to send it to them.

With how much the shipping fees are and insurance I could have probably bought a cheap FUNCTIONING bass instead of shipping a jacked up bass across the country several times.

Where did you buy it from? I'm guessing it's not local to you. I want to get this straight when you got the bass it had a bad switch you shipped it off to Rickenbacker or the store you bought it from and the switch is going out again correct.

I shipped it back to the store I bought it from the first time, and they fixed the first faulty switch.
I'm guessing they just rigged the one that was already on there and didn't replace it like they should have. They should've covered the shipping since It arrived at your house not 100% correct or they should at least cover shipping for you to send it back and their tech replace the switch. But it does suck to ship a bass all over the place for a part that probably cost less than $10. I think a new switch is the only way to go.

Man! 2 bad switches on one new bass. You have some really crappy luck. Maybe it's just a sign that RIC's aren't in the cards for you.

I mean if I was constantly using the switch I could understand why there would be issues, but I never take it out of middle position. As to whoever suggested in the above post that they didn't replace it: they did. They sent me the faulty switch back with the bass and the new switch craft switch installed.

Honestly Mine Effed up a few times when my Bass was new and I toggled it a bunch of times and it never messed up again. It may just be NSS(New Switch Syndrome). My tone pot does weird S%$t when I roll it almost all the way off but it has never gotten worse or better. I read somewhere that It's a secret growl device and I actually believe it. Maybe I'm just crazy. LOL
