Myself - I think (unless it's way worse in person than it appears in the pictures) I would be very tempted to clear-coat over everything and play noisy, raucous rock on it and dare anyone to say anything about my stickers! :D

That's a lucky score - if it had been just the body with the stickers, no hardware at all, it still would have been worth a lot more than $20.

I tried it out yesterday. I played with my friends who play garage rock and we all had a good laugh at how it looks. Then we proceeded to deafen the entire neighborhood.

It is not really awful in person it just looks pretty shoddy. I cleaned all the metal off and it is nice and shiny the paint just looks bad, except for the headstock.

Last night I read the first couple of sentences from the OP over and over. Ended up staring at the 20$ part for a good couple of minutes. Woke up this morning and shattered this dream I had that I found my own Rickenbacker at a rummage sale...Reality came crashing down on me :bawl:

Anyways, massive envy over here! The best of luck with getting it refinished, and when you do - post sound clips!

Yeah for sure. I do not have a great recording interface but I think I could definitely do that.

That is a total gem. Stickers and all. Re-string it, play it, love it. Don't change a thing. it has a total Ric personality like that.

At one time Chris Squire had apparently put flower wallpaper on his Ric. He's had that thing sanded down and re-finished so many times it has apparently changed the color of the sound. Or should I say colour, being whose bass it is.

Anyway, nothing wrong with an anime-themed, flowery Ric. For $20, nothing wrong AT ALL.

Awesome score, congrats.

Personally I'd do anything possible to get to the original finish short of screwing it up.

Then if that doesn't work, hire a pro, if you have to ask its probably best you don't attempt it.
No offense,,,, but you could easily end up much worse than you are currently if you aren't careful.

Looks like they used regular art paint. I'd go down to the hardware store and get some Citristrip paint stripper. It would probably cut the mess and not harm the original finish. It's a cheap solution. I bet it wouldn't take much to salvage this bass without having to spend $$$ an entire refin.

Even if it did affect the original finish, you're were going to get it professionally refinished anyway.

2nd best TB score ever, behind only the guy last year that got the minty `62 shell pink Jazz for $100. I wouldn`t restore it. I`d either A: play it as - is for the most part. Or B: Sell it on Feebay - with some shrewd wheelin & dealin`, you could get a nice Ric for probably a net cost of a couple hundred bucks.

I don't know man he got a pretty sweet deal too, with the right care and restoration this could be one very beautiful Ric,

My $100 62 Jazz Bass find and his $20 Ric find is so encouraging that there are still great finds out there if you just keep your eyes open and end up in the right place at the right time.

I make it a point now to hit my local pawn shops and good wills and occasionally the flea markets and garage sale yards.
The way I see it sooner or later I've got to score again and my hopes is for an early 70's Fender or better.
High hopes I know but anythings possible and I've got nothing but time to chase this dream.

I hit my local thrift store every other week or so. Best thing I`ve scored is a Matsumoko Tele - type guitar for $20.

Hey it's better than nothing which is about all I've found since the J Bass.

Well I take that back, I found a 1930's 8 string resonator mandolin from a company called Favorite.
A 1949 violin with some paperwork that verifies age.
And an old bass clarinet from the 60's but it's a student Normandy model and junk more or less.

All 3 of those were $35

I'm hoping to restore the violin and mandolin since they are both really old and cool looking.

No guitars or basses yet, but it's bound to happen sooner or later.
