Hey Ric5.
Which quarter pounders will you use?
I put in some SPB3's in my Phil Lynott project Bass 94 MIJ which I found way too hot. Might try the 2's.
Hey, I hope you don't get too disheartened with Ric Basses.
It's Guys like yourself, us Ric novices would occasionally ask advice of.
I've just purchased my long time dream Bass, an 08 Jetglo. This, believe me was no mean feat for an Aussie.
As there are no regular Ric Dealers here, due to the 24 month wait, and no help from anyone to do with Rickenbacker, I was fortunate enough to have a friend purchase me the Bass in the States and take it with check in luggage on the plane to Aussie. Lucky, 2008 is jetglo year.
Anyway, I admire John Hall's in-house, in-family policy and lucky for him, demand is higher than supply, but Ric do seem very distant.
Already I can tell that if I have any probs or q's re my Bass, that I shouldn't rely on any customer service, but rely on the vast experience of Guys like yourself and Joey.
Don't sell them all, you'll be curious one day soon.

it's an obsession. I need counseling, JB. But there were so many mid-sixties RM1999s, deluxes, and late-60s/early-70s 4001s in private hands in Europe, in response to newspaper and magazine ads I placed, or advertised locally and strictly in print, or by word of mouth from local band guys, or on local bulletin boards for sale. Such low prices compared to electronic marketplaces like eBay or Craigz, and eight whole months in which to be tempted beyond endurance.....

The quarter pound pickups have 1/4" pole pieces!!!
I tried the sbj-2 and I thought they were too hot and I prefer the 1/4 pounders. But I prefer them with my j-retro preamp. Passive jazz basses leave me wanting more.
One of the benefits of being on the RickResource forum for many years is I know more about Rics than I will ever be able to use in real life. They are interesting retro instruments.

But aren't you missing a couple of necessary pole pieces in the ones that you picture above?

8 pole pieces cover 5 strings quite nicely. As long as you don't have strings that go outside the the magnetic field. The old Rickenbacker toaster pickups have 6 poles and they work equally well for 4, and 5, and 8 string basses.
Yes, without bashing on either the Factory Forum or the RRF, I was expelled for posting unacceptable information.
I own no Rickenbackers. I have no plans to own a Rickenbacker, because, among other things, I feel the price point is set artificially high.
What turns me off is that without fail, every discussion about Rickenbackers turns into some testosterone fueled dicksize contest.
I don't see this sort of zealotry with any other manufacturer, any other instrument model or style.
You can go right now to TDPRI.com, formerly telecaster.com, and read positive, helpful threads about everything from Warmoth parts guitars to Japanese tele copies. Nobody cops an attitude and talks about fakes and copies, nobody opines about stealing Fender's livelihood.
And certainly, the Fender Corporation doesn't send out it's team of litigious ninja monkeys any time someone draws a picture of a tele on the back of a napkin.
I've played Ricks from the 70's, 80's and 90's at various places. I found them to be decent, reasonable basses, with uncomfortable necks, usually priced about 20% more than I'd pay, even on a splurge.
If I ask here "I'm thinking I need a bit more low mids from my P-Bass, do you think a set of Quarter Pounders would help?", I'll get reasonable responses.
If I ask the same about a 4003 on RickResource, I'll be branded a heretic and told that nothing short of the pickups that are carved out of John Hall's ass by a team of specially trained Gnomes will do.

wow- i spend a LOT of time on rickresource,and had no idea about any of this-i am sorry that jeff,elys,and dale are not on there-i personally have not had any issues,and i have had my share of less than praise-worthy posts over there. elys-you rock! your collection and passion for ricks have always awed me. and jeff-when are you going to go into the guitar making business? i really love a lot of your creations,esp the fenderbirds,even though i personally would not touch a 5 string bass with a 10 foot pole! 
well actually i have,but i prefer 4 stringers. i have found most folks at rickresource to be friendly,helpful and usually receptive. i have certainly learned a lot more about the bass model variances than i ever knew before,and a lot of that knowledge came from you guy's posts. it has led me to make some informed purchases,ie,my 4004cii and just recently a 93 v63,which i really love,in spite of the fact that i don't think it really sounds or plays like a 1963 rick-i actually think it's better,for me,that is,very very solid and punchy sounding. anyway,my 2 cents.

It belongs to Mr. Dave Pasco. The work was completed 2 years ago. At this time I am doing a Gensis MR Dbl. Neck replica for Dave. He sent me 2 instruments that are being grafted into 1. I have been doing this type of work since 1972.

That is why I am glad to be out of there ... it truely is like a scientology cult mentality ...
and if you want to really control the low mids on any bass get an audere 4 band preamp installed!
I am seriously thinking of building a copy of a Ric but making a 5 string bass that actually works right ... it will be fingerstyle playable and it have pickups that actually cover all 5 strings ... and it won't cost me $2000 to $3000.
As an owner of (now, thanks to Jeff/Ric5) 9 Rickenbackers (well, 10 depending upon how you count my 4080/12), I've been a member of the rickresource group for a long time. I've always found it pretty civil and informative, and always counted Jeff, Dale, and Elys as among the most helpful. Seems like, no matter what the content, every board goes through a ban-happy phase...and then the board dies. Seems that I've noticed the volume of posts on rickresource being way down, at least in the bass forum, and what there is isn't particularly new or interesting. It's too bad. Given that the manufacturer already has a board that is the natural place for the shiny happy posters, you'd think that an independent board could handle independence in its views.
However, I do have to say that when, many many years ago, I asked my P-bass to sound like a Ric, it failed utterly.

I have been building instruments for years ... the thing is there are essentially one-offs so it is not really profitable ...
I mainly build for me ... once in a while I do something for someone else ... but those jobs are quite often a break even proposition ... I don't mind not making much money I just don't want to do the work and then loose money ...
It's actually nice to see some of you Ric guys over here on TB. I used to hang out at RicResource for a while,(not under my TB name), but aside from my one Ric bass, I'm a traitor, owning both Fender and Gibson basses too. Sorry to hear how fanatical it's gotten over there, it's too bad. Take care, Alan, 2Tens.
I agree on that with the guitar high gain pickups (six pole pieces) as well. They work perfectly on my Ric5 inspired 4004Cii 4-2-5 bass.
